Chapter 11 - The Foundation Stone

Six months later, the spring thaw finally broke across Boston, turning the gray city streets into a vibrant tapestry of blooming dogwoods and warm sunlight. I stood on the second level of Stonebrook Plaza, my heels clicking softly against the polished marble floor as I walked past Harrow & Stone.

The glass display cases still gleamed with diamonds, and the scent of lemon polish and high-end leather still filled the air. I paused for a moment outside the boutique, looking at the exact spot where I had stood behind the square marble column six months ago—the exact moment my old life had shattered into a thousand jagged pieces.

The young clerk with the manicured nails looked up from behind the counter, her eyes widening slightly in sudden, horrified recognition. She instinctively took a step back, her hands hovering nervously over the glass case as if she expected me to pull out a phone and freeze her entire inventory on the spot.

I couldn't help it. A small, genuine smile touched the corners of my mouth.

"Good morning," I said softly, my voice calm and completely devoid of malice.

The clerk blinked, her tense posture relaxing just a fraction as she offered a tentative, polite nod in return. "Good morning, ma'am. Can I help you find something today?"

"No thank you," I replied, turning away from the window with my head held high, adjusting the strap of my leather handbag. "I’m just passing through."
