Chapter 5 - The Midnight Eviction

Midnight arrived with the steady, relentless drum of rain against the windowpanes of our master bedroom. Caleb had not left. Instead, he spent the last four hours pacing the length of the hardwood floor in his home office down the hall, his muffled phone conversations echoing through the vents. I sat upright in bed, fully dressed in black trousers and a cashmere sweater, reviewing the digital copies of our tax returns and trust documents that I had quietly downloaded onto my encrypted external hard drive.

A sharp knock sounded at the bedroom door before it pushed open. Caleb stood in the doorway, his tie loosened, his shirt collar unbuttoned, looking every bit like a man who had finally realized the house was burning down around him and all the exits were bolted.

"We need to talk reasonably about this, Julianna," he said, stepping into the room with his hands raised in a placating gesture. "You can't just lock me out of my own life. If you file for divorce now, publically, the scandal will destroy my reputation with the zoning board. My partners will pull out of the waterfront project, and there won't be any assets left for either of us to divide."

"Your reputation stopped being my problem the moment you fastened an eighty-five-thousand-dollar necklace around another woman's neck," I replied, not looking up from my laptop screen. "And as for the waterfront project, you might want to check your email. I sent a formal notice to your primary investors three hours ago, detailing your misuse of corporate funds and notifying them that I am revoking my personal guarantee on the project's secondary loan."

Caleb stumbled backward as if he had been physically struck, his hands dropping to his sides. "You... you did what?"

"I protected myself," I said, closing the laptop with a sharp snap and looking him dead in the eye. "You thought you could bleed me dry, hide behind your boyish charm, and leave me standing in a mall while you played billionaire with my money. You underestimated me, Caleb. Every single lie you told, every forged signature on the secondary credit applications, every fraudulent transfer from my trust—it’s all documented and sitting with my attorney right now."

"Julianna, please," he whispered, taking a desperate step forward, his voice cracking with genuine panic. "I have nowhere to go. My accounts are frozen. The apartment I rented for Chloe requires a cash deposit I don't have anymore because you locked the liquidity pools. If you do this, I am completely ruined."

"Then I suggest you start packing," I said, standing up from the bed and walking past him toward the door. "Because the police are going to be conducting an audit of your business premises tomorrow morning, and you’ll want to be packed before they arrive with a search warrant."

I walked down the stairs, leaving him standing alone in the dark master bedroom, listening to the hollow sound of his own defeat echoing through the empty halls of a life he had systematically dismantled with his own arrogance.
