Chapter 9 - The Boardroom Coup

The emergency meeting of the Marston Real Estate Development board of directors was convened in the forty-second-floor executive suite at 8:00 AM on a freezing Thursday. The room was tense, smelling of stale coffee and expensive cigar smoke from the partners who had spent the last twenty-four hours realizing their multi-million dollar investments were tied to a sinking ship.
Caleb sat at the head of the mahogany table, looking ghost-white, his collar soaked in sweat despite the freezing air conditioning. When I walked through the double doors accompanied by Evelyn Vance and a federal regulatory investigator, the entire room went dead silent.
"What is she doing here?" one of the senior partners, a heavy-set man named Arthur Pendelton, demanded, standing up from his chair. "This is a closed corporate executive session. Mrs. Marston has no operational stake in this firm."
"Actually, Arthur, she has every stake," Evelyn said smoothly, opening her briefcase and distributing crisp copies of a forensic audit report to every seat at the table. "As the primary holder of the collateral backing the firm’s secondary operating loans, my client holds absolute veto power over corporate liquidity."
Caleb slammed his fist onto the table, his voice cracking with panic. "Don't listen to them! She’s executing a malicious hostile takeover out of personal spite! We can restructure the debt—"
"With what money, Caleb?" I asked, stepping forward and stopping halfway down the length of the table, looking directly into his terrified, bloodshot eyes. "The state commission has frozen every corporate asset linked to your offshore accounts. The bank has seized the collateral. And your primary investors have just received copies of Chloe’s sworn deposition detailing how you used corporate funds to finance your private lifestyle."
Arthur Pendelton flipped open the audit report, his eyes scanning the columns of numbers detailing missing capital, unauthorized personal withdrawals, and forged signatures. The color rapidly drained from his face. He looked up at Caleb with pure, unadulterated hatred.
"You embezzled operating capital to buy jewelry for an intern," Arthur whispered, the words hanging in the chilled air like a death sentence.
"It was an investment," Caleb stammered, backing away from the table as the two federal investigators stepped forward, pulling a pair of cold steel handcuffs from their utility belts. "Arthur, you know me! We built this firm together!"
May you like
"We built a business," Arthur said, turning his back on him in disgust. "You built a criminal enterprise."
The click of the handcuffs echoing through the executive suite was sharp, clean, and final. Caleb didn't fight back. He allowed the investigators to turn him around, his head bowed, his tailored suit jacket dragging slightly as he was led out of the boardroom doors, never to return.
