Chapter 6 - THE MOTHER-IN-LAW'S REVENGE: A FAMILY AT WAR

By the third afternoon, the illusion of Miller family solidarity had completely shattered.

Abandoned by their wealthy daughter-in-law and locked out of the Malibu sanctuary, Robert, Tiffany, and matriarch Eleanor Miller had retreated to a cheap, roadside motel off the interstate.

It was a far cry from the marble floors and ocean breezes they felt entitled to.

According to reports from building staff I had kept in contact with, the motel room was a pressure cooker of mutual recrimination.

Eleanor blamed Tiffany for trapping Robert with a pregnancy that might not even secure their financial survival.

Tiffany blamed Robert for lying about the ownership of the Malibu bungalow, swearing she never would have married a penniless fraud if she had known the house was entirely in my name.

And Robert?

Robert sat on the edge of the sagging double bed, staring blankly at his phone, realizing that every single person who had praised his betrayal was now drowning right alongside him.

At 2:15 p.m., my attorney called me with an update.

“Audrey, you have a visitor in the lobby downstairs,” Mr. Vance said.

“Who?”

“Eleanor Miller. She bypassed reception by cornering the concierge. She insists on speaking with you face-to-face.”

I looked at my tailored blazer hanging in the wardrobe.

“Send her up.”

Ten minutes later, a sharp knock echoed at my suite door.

When I opened it, Eleanor stood there.

The proud, imperious matriarch who had lorded over my dinner parties and sneered at my career was gone.

Her designer jacket was wrinkled, her hair was unstyled, and her eyes burned with bitter fury.

She pushed past me without an invitation, marching into the luxurious suite and looking around in disgust.

“You live in luxury while my son sleeps in a fleabag motel,” she spat, turning to face me.

I remained seated by the window, not offering her a chair.

“Your son chose to marry another woman while legally bound to me, Eleanor,” I replied calmly. “If he prefers fleabag motels with his pregnant mistress, that is a family tradition you should be proud of.”

Eleanor slammed her handbag onto the coffee table.

“Drop the divorce proceedings! Sign the house back over to Robert! If you do this with grace, we might—might—allow you to visit during holidays as a family friend. But if you ruin my son’s life over a little indiscretion, I will make sure your reputation in corporate circles is destroyed!”

I couldn't help it.

I laughed.

A clear, unbothered laugh that chilled her to the bone.

“My reputation, Eleanor? I am the primary rainmaker at my firm. I just closed a multi-million-dollar deal that your son couldn't even spell. Meanwhile, Robert is facing felony charges for corporate embezzlement alongside his new bride.”

Eleanor’s face went slack.

“Embezzlement?” she whispered.

“Did you really think I wouldn't audit the accounts they used to fund your spa memberships?” I stood up, walking slowly toward her until I towered over her despite my heels. “You called me cold and barren. You called me a woman who only knows how to make money. Well, congratulations, Eleanor. That money just bought your son a one-way ticket to federal prison.”

Eleanor staggered backward, clutching her chest.

“You wouldn’t...”

“Try me,” I whispered. “Now get out of my suite before I call hotel security to have you escorted off the premises the exact same way your son was escorted off my property.”

She glared at me with pure venom, opened her mouth to hurl one final insult, then thought better of it, grabbed her bag, and stormed out of the room, slamming the door behind her.
