Chapter 2 - FIVE YEARS OF SHADOWS AND SILENCE

Five years. In human terms, it was sixty months, but to Lena, it was measured in bruises healed in secret, tears swallowed in the dark, and a shrinking sense of self until she felt like nothing more than a ghost haunting her own life.

When Lena had first met Marcus, he was charming, brilliant, and attentive—a rising corporate star who made her feel like the center of the universe. The wedding vows had been romantic, spoken under a canopy of white roses. But the mask slipped slowly, insidiously. First came the isolation from her friends, then the controlling comments about what she wore, and finally, the physical violence that turned their upscale apartment into a gilded cage.

Marcus’s public persona was immaculate. To the outside world, he was the charming executive with a beautiful, quiet wife. Behind closed doors, he was a monster fueled by alcohol, professional insecurities, and a sadistic need for control.

Lena learned the rules of survival early. She learned the exact tone of his voice when he walked through the door that signaled danger. She learned how to cook meals precisely to his liking, how to keep the apartment dead silent when he was working from home, and how to apply waterproof concealer over the purpling handprints on her neck before heading out to her diner shifts.

She had tried to leave once, two years into the marriage. Marcus had caught her at the front door, dragged her back inside by her hair, and beaten her so severely she spent three days coughing up blood on the bathroom floor. He whispered in her ear while she wept: "No one will ever help you, Lena. No one cares about a nobody like you. If you ever try to run again, I won't just break your bones; I'll destroy what's left of your soul."

From that day on, the hope inside her died. She became a shell, moving mechanically through the days, hiding the black business card in her worn leather purse like a hidden weapon she was too terrified to fire. She believed she was trapped forever in the nightmare of her own making, enduring the slow, agonizing erosion of her life—until the night the glass shattered for good.
