Chapter 4 - THE VOICE IN THE DARKNESS

Inside the cramped bathroom, the world narrowed down to the harsh sound of Lena's ragged breathing and the terrifying thud of her husband's boots outside the door. Every pulse of her heartbeat sent a fresh jolt of white-hot agony down her mangled left arm, but she bit her lower lip so hard it bled, refusing to scream out loud.
Ring. Ring. Ring.
The phone tone sounded deafeningly loud in the small, tiled room. With every passing second, panic threatened to swallow her whole. What if the card was a joke? What if Vincent Moretti had thrown it away years ago? What if a ruthless crime lord didn't give a damn about a battered waitress bleeding out on a bathroom floor?
Then, the ringing stopped.
"Talk."
The voice on the other end was low, steady, and clipped with an absolute authority that made the hairs on Lena's arms stand on end. There was no polite greeting, no confusion—just the raw, commanding presence of a man who ruled empires from the shadows.
"I... I don't know if you remember me," Lena whispered, her voice cracking into a pathetic sob. "I'm the waitress from the diner."
A heavy, suffocating silence stretched across the phone line. In the hallway, Marcus slammed his shoulder against the bathroom door, splintering the aged wood around the lock.
"Lena," Vincent said softly.
Just her name, spoken in that dark, gravelly register. Hearing someone acknowledge her existence, remembering her face in the middle of this nightmare, broke the last of her emotional dam. Tears streamed down her pale, bruised cheeks, mixing with the sweat on her forehead.
Before she could form her next sentence, Marcus let out a drunken, enraged roar from the other side of the door. He threw his entire weight against the barrier again, and a loud crack echoed through the apartment. Wood splintered, and the deadbolt groaned under the assault.
"Who's there?" Vincent's voice instantly sharpened, dropping several degrees into an arctic, lethal chill.
"My husband," Lena choked out, clutching her broken arm to her chest.
"What did he do?"
Lena looked down at her twisted, useless limb, the skin already swelling into a horrific bruised purple. "He... he broke it."
Silence fell over the line again. It wasn't hesitation; it was the terrifying calm before an absolute storm. When Vincent spoke next, every syllable was carved from ice.
"Give me your address."
Lena whispered the street name and apartment number just as another deafening crash shook the doorframe. The wood gave way further, revealing a dark, menacing gap where the latch had been.
"How long?" Lena cried out, her lungs burning, feeling life slip through her fingers.
Vincent Moretti did not hesitate for a single second.

"Stay alive for eight minutes."
At that exact moment, the bathroom door exploded inward.
