Chapter 9 - REBUILDING FROM THE ASHES

Two weeks had passed inside the Moretti estate. The cast on Lena’s left arm felt heavy, but the weight in her chest had entirely vanished. Under the gentle care of Mrs. Gable and the quiet, respectful presence of Vincent, Lena was slowly learning how to breathe again.

She spent her afternoons in the estate’s sprawling glass conservatory, reading books she had never had time for, surrounded by blooming orchids and warm sunlight. For the first time in her life, she didn't have to look over her shoulder. She didn't have to tiptoe across the floor.

One evening, as twilight painted the sky in shades of amber and violet, Vincent found her sitting by the fountain in the courtyard. He wore a simple black shirt with the sleeves rolled up, revealing the strong, corded muscles of his forearms—a far cry from the untouchable mob boss image he projected to the world.

"How is the arm?" Vincent asked quietly, walking over and sitting on the stone bench beside her.

"Much better," Lena smiled softly, turning to look at him. "The pain is almost gone, Doctor Vance says it's healing cleanly."

Vincent nodded, his dark eyes softening as he looked at her. The pale, terrified waitress from the diner was gone; in her place was a woman of quiet strength, her eyes shining with newfound resilience.

"Good," Vincent said softly. "You know, Lena... you don't have to stay hidden here forever. If you want to start over somewhere else—Chicago, London, anywhere in the world—I can provide you with a new identity, a new life, and all the financial backing you'll ever need."

Lena looked down at her hands, then turned to meet his gaze directly. The gratitude and respect in her eyes ran deep, but beneath them flickered something new—a spark of courage.

"I don't want to run anymore," Lena said steadily. "For five years, I ran from fear. Then I called you. And you didn't just save me—you gave me my life back. I want to learn how to live it. Right here, if you'll have me."

May you like

Vincent stared at her for a long moment, a rare, genuine smile touching the corners of his lips.

"You can stay as long as you want, Lena," he replied, his voice husky with emotion. "In fact... I was hoping you would say that."
