Chapter 10 - A New Dawn, A Free Mother

Two years later.

We live in a quiet, sunny neighborhood in a different state. The winters are mild, the schools are excellent, and the shadow of the Hamilton name cannot reach us here.

I work as a senior accountant for a local non-profit. I have friends who know the real me, not the timid, isolated woman Daniel tried to create.

Ethan is a chaotic, giggling toddler. He runs through the house with boundless energy, completely unaware of the dark storm that surrounded his arrival into the world. He knows only love. He knows only safety.

And Rebecca.

Rebecca is ten now. She is fierce, brilliant, and fiercely protective of her little brother. She goes to therapy to process what happened that day in the hospital, but she is healing.

Every night, before she goes to bed, I sit on the edge of her mattress.

"Do you know you're my hero?" I ask her, brushing the hair out of her eyes.

She rolls her eyes, but a small smile plays on her lips. "I know, Mom. You tell me every day."

"And I will keep telling you every day for the rest of my life," I say, kissing her forehead.

If she hadn't been brave enough to press that little red circle on a stolen phone, my life would be a nightmare. I would have been locked away, labeled insane, mourning a child who had been stolen from me by the people I was supposed to trust.

Instead, I am here. We are free. We are safe.

I turn off the lamp in Rebecca's room and step out into the hallway. I can hear Ethan softly snoring in his crib next door.

I walk into the living room, pour myself a cup of tea, and look out the window at the quiet, moonlit street.

May you like

No more footsteps in the hall. No more secrets beneath the bed.

Just peace. The beautiful, unbreakable peace of a mother who fought for her children and won.
