Chapter 9 - The Aftermath

The trial was a media circus, but I didn't have to testify.

Faced with the audio recording, the forged documents, Nurse Higgins’ testimony, and the financial ledgers, Daniel’s lawyers advised him to take a plea deal.

He pleaded guilty to felony kidnapping and fraud. He was sentenced to twelve years in a federal penitentiary.

Lorraine, stubborn to the very end, took her case to trial. She lost spectacularly. The jury deliberated for less than two hours before finding her guilty on all counts. She was sentenced to fifteen years. Given her age, it was effectively a life sentence.

Dr. Thorne was arrested at an airport in Geneva two months later and extradited back to the US.

In family court, my divorce was finalized with terrifying speed. With Daniel convicted of felony child endangerment, I was granted sole legal and physical custody of Rebecca and Ethan.

The Hamilton estate, riddled with debt and scandal, was liquidated by the private equity firms. The grand house where I had been made to feel so small and insignificant was sold to a real estate developer and torn down to build condos.

But the most surprising legal victory came from the generational trust. Because Daniel was fundamentally unfit and incarcerated, the judge ruled that the trust funds designated for the children would bypass him entirely.

The ten million dollars that Daniel had tried to steal was placed into a heavily monitored, ironclad trust for Ethan and Rebecca, completely untouchable by anyone until they turned twenty-five.

Daniel had lost his wife, his children, his freedom, and the very money he had destroyed his life to get.
