Chapter 5 - The Blue Folder's Secrets

The next morning, the hospital room was flooded with sunlight, but I felt nothing but a cold, lingering dread.

A police officer stood guard outside my door. No one was allowed in without my explicit permission.

My lawyer, a viciously sharp family attorney named Marcus Vance, arrived at 9:00 AM. I had called him the moment the police left my room the night before.

Marcus threw his briefcase onto the small sofa and ran a hand through his graying hair.

"Eleanor," he said, his tone dead serious. "I just got off the phone with the DA's office. They served a search warrant on that blue folder Lorraine dropped."

"What was in it?" I asked, adjusting the pillows behind my back.

"A masterclass in fraud," Marcus replied. "They had a pre-signed, notarized emergency custody transfer. They had a forged psychiatric evaluation signed by Dr. Thorne, claiming you were a danger to yourself and your children. And they had a transfer order for the hospital, authorizing Nurse Higgins to move the infant to a private medical facility owned by the Hamilton family."

I felt sick to my stomach. "How did Daniel get a notary to sign a document I wasn't present for?"

"Money," Marcus said simply. "Lorraine Hamilton’s money buys a lot of blind eyes. But here is the kicker, Eleanor. Why now? Why go through this elaborate, highly illegal, Ocean’s Eleven-style plot to steal a baby? Daniel could have just filed for divorce and fought you for custody."

I shook my head. "I don't know. Daniel has always been controlling, and Lorraine has never liked me. She thinks I’m new money. Trash. But this? Risking federal kidnapping charges? It doesn't make sense."

Marcus leaned forward. "It makes perfect sense when you look at the Hamilton Trust."

He pulled a thick stack of financial documents from his briefcase.

"I did some digging into Daniel’s accounts last night. Your husband is broke, Eleanor. Bankrupt. He’s been day-trading the family’s liquid assets for five years and hiding the losses. He owes nearly seven million dollars to some very unforgiving private equity firms."

I stared at him, unable to process the words. "Daniel is wealthy. The estate..."

"The estate is tied up in a generational trust," Marcus interrupted. "Daniel doesn't get the principal. He gets an allowance. But there is a stipulation in the late grandfather's will. If Daniel produces a male heir, a secondary trust fund unlocks on the child's birth. Ten million dollars."

The room spun.

Ethan wasn't just a baby to them. He was a paycheck. He was a bailout.

"If Daniel filed for divorce," Marcus explained softly, "you would get primary custody of a newborn. The trust money would be tied up in family court for years. It would be monitored by a judge to ensure it was spent on the child. Daniel needed absolute, sole custody immediately. He needed to be the sole guardian of the estate to access the cash to pay off his debts before the equity firms broke his legs."

Tears spilled down my cheeks. My husband didn't want my son. He wanted the money my son represented. He was willing to lock me in a psychiatric ward and steal my children to cover his own failures.
