Chapter 10 - A New Dawn

Two weeks later, the sun was shining brightly over a small, picturesque coastal town in California, three thousand miles away from my toxic family. I sat on the porch of a beautiful beachfront house. It was secure, completely private, and entirely ours. I watched Mia building a sandcastle near the water's edge, while Agent Reynolds sat nearby in a lawn chair, reading a book and keeping a watchful, trained eye on our perimeter. The bruises on Mia's wrists had completely faded, and her laughter had returned, slowly but surely. She was healing, and for the first time in years, so was I.
The news back east had been highly satisfying. Victor was denied bail and was currently awaiting trial in a federal lockup, facing decades behind bars. The subsequent investigation had exposed my parents' extensive financial crimes. Their house was foreclosed on, and their elite social circle abandoned them overnight. My mother had tried to call me fifty times, leaving voicemails where she cried, apologized, and begged for help. I never listened to a single one. I simply changed my number and my name.

The government had provided me with a new identity, a reward for my years of dedicated, classified service. To the world, Harper and Mia had simply vanished into thin air. To my family, I was a ghost they could never catch. I walked down the wooden steps, feeling the warm sand between my toes, and approached my daughter. Mia looked up, her face covered in sunscreen and beaming with a massive smile. "Look, Mama! I built a fortress!" she cheered, pointing at the elaborate sandcastle.
"It's beautiful, sweetie," I said, sitting down beside her in the sand. She looked at me innocently and asked, "Is it strong enough to keep the bad guys out?" I looked at my brilliant, resilient daughter. I thought about the darkness I had willingly stepped into to protect her, and the monsters I had destroyed so she could play freely in the sun. I pulled her into a tight, secure hug. "Yes, baby," I whispered into her hair. "It's strong enough. And as long as I'm here, no one will ever hurt you again." The ocean breeze carried my words away, sealing a promise that could never be broken. We were finally free.
