Chapter 4 - The Safehouse

We drove for two hours into the mountains. The rain started coming down in heavy sheets, washing the salt off my windshield. Mia fell asleep in the back seat, exhausted by her own terror. I kept the heater on high, checking the rearview mirror every thirty seconds, but no one was following us. My family was too cowardly to give chase. We finally pulled into the driveway of a secluded cabin deep in the woods. It was a black-site property—off the grid, heavily fortified, and stocked with enough supplies to last months.
I carried Mia inside and laid her on the thick wool blanket on the couch. After locking the steel-reinforced doors and engaging the perimeter alarms, I finally let myself breathe. I sat on the floor next to my sleeping daughter, gently taking her small hand in mine. Examining the bruises under the warm cabin light, rage boiled in my stomach, hot and acidic. My mother had orchestrated this. She had intentionally left Mia alone with a known predator. Why? What could possibly motivate a grandmother to serve her own flesh and blood on a silver platter?
My encrypted laptop chirped from my tactical bag. I pulled it out and opened the screen to find the file Marcus had already sent. Victor Hale. Age 62. Two decades of suspected money laundering with connections to offshore accounts. But the most interesting file wasn't Victor's; it was my father's. I started digging into my parents' financial records, accessing data that my security clearance laid bare. The truth was uglier than I could have ever imagined. My parents' luxury lifestyle was a lie.

They were completely bankrupt. Their business had failed three years ago, and their massive house in the suburbs was mortgaged to the breaking point. The designer clothes, the country club memberships, the expensive cars—all of it was funded by loans from Victor. He wasn't just my uncle; he was their primary creditor. Victor had always been obsessed with having a family he could control, a twisted desire to have a "pure" child to mold since he couldn't have children of his own.
I read the intercepted emails between my mother and Victor, and my blood turned to ice. They hadn't just left Mia with him by accident. They were letting him "bond" with her, grooming her to trust him in exchange for full debt forgiveness. They had sold my daughter. They had literally put a price tag on her innocence to save their own comfortable lives. I closed the laptop. The screen went dark, reflecting my own hollow eyes. The Harper who loved her parents died in that chair.
