Chapter 2 - The Eviction Notice

The next morning, the mansion in Coral Gables felt entirely different. Without power, without water, and without the illusion of grandeur, it was just a giant, suffocating concrete box.
I didn't go back to the house that night. I checked into a penthouse suite at the Four Seasons, ordered room service, and slept better than I had in years. When I woke up, my phone was flooded with eighty-four missed calls from Spencer, Evelyn, and various "loyal" family members.
I ignored all of them and called Mr. Miller, my lead attorney at Apex Holdings.
“Are the papers ready?” I asked, sipping my coffee.
“Signed, sealed, and currently being delivered by our private security team, Ma’am,” he replied.
Back at the mansion, Spencer was frantically trying to call electricians, only to be told that the main grid had been legally disconnected due to a change in ownership status. Penelope, the glowing bride from yesterday, was currently screaming about her ruined designer shoes, which had stepped in spoiled shrimp juice.
Evelyn was trying to fan herself with a wedding program. “Don’t worry, Spencer,” she cooed to her son. “Laura is just throwing a tantrum. Once she calms down, we’ll take half of whatever she has in the divorce. Penelope’s father will send his lawyers.”
Just then, three black SUVs pulled into the driveway. Mr. Miller stepped out, flanked by armed security guards. He didn't knock. He simply unlocked the front door with the master key I had provided.
“Who do you think you are?!” Evelyn shrieked, clutching her silk robe.
“I am the legal representative of Apex Holdings,” Mr. Miller said, his voice cold and professional. He handed Spencer a thick manila envelope. “This property belongs to the Apex corporate portfolio. You have been residing here as guests of the Chairwoman, Ms. Laura. Your guest privileges have been permanently revoked.”
Spencer tore open the envelope, his eyes scanning the documents. His face drained of color. “This is a mistake. My name is on the deed!”
“Your name is on a subsidiary trust that is 100% owned and operated by Apex,” Mr. Miller corrected smoothly. “You have one hour to vacate the premises. Anything left behind will be considered abandoned property.”
Penelope grabbed Spencer’s arm, her fake nails digging into his suit. “Spencer, what is he talking about? You said you owned this estate! My father is coming here in twenty minutes to discuss our merger!”

Spencer looked at his new "wife," then at the eviction papers. The reality of his situation was finally crashing down on him. He had traded a diamond for a cheap piece of glass, and now, the glass was starting to cut him.
And his nightmare was only just beginning.
