Chapter 6 - Rising From The Ashes

The following months were a period of intense healing and rebirth for me. Erasing Spencer and Evelyn from my life was like excising a tumor. At first, it hurt, but then, the relief was overwhelming.
I rebranded Miller Build Group into Apex Innovations, focusing on sustainable, cutting-edge architecture. I didn't hide in the shadows anymore. I took the title of CEO publicly, appearing on the covers of business magazines. I was no longer the "silent wife." I was a titan in my own right.
It was during a charity gala for children's hospitals—a cause close to my heart due to my own past—that I met Julian.
Julian was a brilliant, self-made architect from New York. He didn't care about my money; he was wealthy in his own right. What drew him to me was my mind. We started talking about sustainable concrete over cocktails, and three hours later, we were sitting on a balcony, laughing like teenagers.
“You have a fierce way of looking at the world, Laura,” Julian said one evening as we walked along the beach, the ocean breeze blowing through my hair.
“I had to learn to be fierce,” I admitted, looking out at the water. “I spent a long time building a castle for a man who didn't appreciate the bricks I was carrying.”
Julian stopped and gently took my hand. “Well, he was a fool. Because the architect is always more valuable than the building.”

For the first time in years, I felt a genuine spark. Julian didn't want to use me. He didn't want to hide me behind his own ego. He wanted to stand beside me. As my relationship with him blossomed, my past began to look smaller and smaller in the rearview mirror.
But Spencer wasn't quite done making a fool of himself. Desperation makes people do incredibly stupid things.
