Chapter 8 - The Final Checkmate

Two years later.

The sun was setting over the Miami skyline, painting the clouds in shades of gold and violet. I stood on the terrace of my new penthouse, sipping a glass of expensive red wine.

Julian stepped out onto the terrace, wrapping his arms around my waist from behind. He kissed my cheek. “The new hospital wing is officially finished,” he murmured. “They named the pediatric ward after you.”

I smiled, leaning back into his embrace. “We did it together.”

Life had moved on in the most beautiful way. Julian and I were engaged, and Apex Holdings had tripled in value. But more importantly, I was at peace. The ghost of my lost child still lingered, but the pain had been replaced by a fierce drive to help other families.

As for my past? I rarely thought about it, but the universe has a funny way of showing you the end of a story.

Earlier that week, I had been driving through a less desirable part of town to inspect a new development site. I stopped at a red light near a cheap diner.

Through the greasy window of the diner, I saw a woman in a stained uniform wiping down tables. Her hair was frizzy, her posture stooped. It took me a moment to realize it was Evelyn. She was working for minimum wage, yelling at a customer who had spilled coffee.

Outside the diner, a man in a faded, oversized t-shirt was sweeping the sidewalk. He paused to wipe sweat from his forehead. It was Spencer. He looked exhausted, broken, and entirely defeated by life.

I sat in my air-conditioned car, watching the people who had thrown me out for a "real woman." They had traded a kingdom for a pile of dirt, all because of greed and ego.

The light turned green.

I didn't honk. I didn't lower the window to gloat. I simply pressed the gas pedal and drove forward, leaving them in the dust where they belonged.

I had my empire. I had my love. And I finally had my happily ever after.
