Chapter 1 - The Stolen Device

My three-year-old daughter walked through the one door nobody in billionaire Marcus Cole’s mansion was allowed to open.

I thought I would lose my job before breakfast.

Instead, Lily pointed at his security monitor and exposed something his own fiancée had done behind our backs.

What Marcus saw on that screen made his face go completely still.

The first thing I saw was Lily’s purple shoe.

It lay sideways in the east hallway, one tiny silver buckle catching the cold morning light.

I stopped pushing my cleaning cart.

Then I heard her voice.

“Mister Marcus, look.”

My stomach dropped.

The forbidden security-room door was open.

I ran.

When I reached it, Marcus Cole was kneeling beside my three-year-old daughter in front of six wall-mounted screens.

The Marcus Cole.

Thirty-four. Founder and CEO of Cole Meridian. Billionaire real-estate and logistics investor.

And my employer.

Lily stood beside him in her purple Easter dress, one white sock slipping down her ankle and Mr. Bun hanging from her arm.

Her tiny hand was pressed against a monitor.

“Lily!”

She turned.

“Mommy.”

I rushed inside and picked her up.

“I am so sorry, sir. She slipped away for maybe a minute. I’ll take her back.”

“No.”

I froze.

Marcus stood slowly.

“I’m not angry.”

His eyes returned to the screen.

Lily touched my cheek.

“Mean lady.”

“What lady?”

She pointed.

“There.”

Marcus touched the keyboard.

The footage enlarged.

Yesterday.

2:14 p.m.

The second-floor staff supply closet.

A woman wearing a cream wool coat approached my cleaning cart.

I recognized her instantly.

Vanessa Cain.

Marcus’s fiancée.

The woman whose ivory wedding invitations were stacked downstairs.

The same woman who once told me the best household staff were the ones guests never remembered seeing.

On the monitor, Vanessa reached toward my cart.

Then she picked something up.

My phone.

My throat tightened.

“That’s mine.”

Marcus turned toward me.

“Your phone?”

“Yes. I left it charging yesterday.”

“Where?”

“In that closet. The laundry-room outlet stopped working.”

“And it disappeared?”

“I thought I misplaced it. I reported it to Marta this morning.”

Marcus said nothing.

He stared at the woman he was supposed to marry.

On-screen, Vanessa slipped my phone away and walked out of frame.

For several seconds, the room was completely silent.

Then Lily pointed at Vanessa again.

Her little voice was innocent.

Certain.

“She took it.”

May you like

Marcus slowly turned toward me.

And the expression on his face told me my missing phone had just become something far more serious than either of us understood.
