Chapter 12 - The Happy Ending

He didn't take me to a fancy restaurant.

He took me back to the estate.

The same estate where I used to scrub floors.

But this time, I wasn't carrying a cleaning cart.

The gardens were completely covered in fairy lights.

Thousands of them, glowing like stars in the evening dusk.

In the center of the lawn, a massive blanket was laid out with a picnic basket.

And standing there, wearing a little tuxedo, was Mr. Bun.

Lily ran out from behind a rose bush, giggling.

Marta was right behind her, wiping a tear from her eye.

“What is all this?” I asked, laughing.

Marcus walked me to the center of the lights.

He took both of my hands in his.

“Three years ago, a little girl walked into a room she wasn't supposed to.”

He looked at Lily, who was happily eating a strawberry from the basket.

“She showed me a screen that saved my company. But more importantly...”

He looked back at me, his eyes shining with emotion.

“She brought her mother into my life.”

Marcus dropped to one knee.

He didn't pull out a massive, ostentatious diamond like the one Vanessa wore.

He pulled out a simple, elegant vintage gold band.

“Maya Vance. You brought light into a house that was completely dark.”

Tears were streaming down my face.

“Will you marry me? Will you let me be Lily’s father?”

Lily ran over and threw her arms around Marcus’s neck.

“Say yes, Mommy! Say yes!”

I looked at the billionaire kneeling in the grass.

I looked at my daughter, radiant and happy.

I didn't think about the past. I didn't think about the struggles or the pain.

I just thought about the future.

“Yes,” I whispered.

Marcus slid the ring onto my finger.

He stood up and kissed me, lifting me off the ground as Lily cheered.

It wasn't a fairy tale.

Fairy tales are about magic.

This was real life. Built on truth, hard work, and a love that survived the storm.

And as we stood there under the lights, I knew one thing for sure.

Sometimes, the best things in life happen when you open the forbidden door.
