Chapter 2 - The Audio File

Why would a billionaire's fiancée steal a maid's phone?
It made no sense.
My phone was a three-year-old cracked Android.
Vanessa’s engagement ring cost more than I would make in my entire lifetime.
“Maya,” Marcus said, his voice dangerously calm. “Was there anything specific on that phone?”
I hugged Lily tighter.
“No, sir. Just pictures of Lily. And a few grocery lists.”
“Think harder.”
He stepped closer.
The scent of cedar and expensive coffee drifted from his crisp white shirt.
“Did you see anything yesterday? Hear anything?”
My breath hitched.
Yesterday.
I had been cleaning the library.
Vanessa had been in the adjoining sunroom, speaking loudly on her phone.
I had left my own phone on the cart, recording a voice memo to remind myself to buy Lily’s asthma medication.
I had forgotten to press stop.
“The voice memo,” I whispered.
Marcus’s eyes narrowed.
“What voice memo?”
“I was recording a reminder for myself. I left it running by accident. Vanessa was in the next room.”
“Who was she talking to?”
“I don’t know. I didn’t listen to it.”
Marcus looked back at the screen.
Vanessa had noticed my phone.
She must have seen the little red recording light.
She thought I was spying on her.
Marcus picked up his own phone and dialed a number.
“Marta,” he said, his voice like ice. “Lock down the gates. Nobody leaves the estate.”
He hung up.
He looked at Lily, who was busy chewing on Mr. Bun’s ear.
Then he looked at me.
“I need you to stay in the east wing today, Maya. Keep Lily with you.”
“Am I fired?”
He actually smiled.
May you like
A small, dark, terrifying smile.
“Fired? No, Maya. You just became the most important person in this house.”
