Chapter 3 - THE GHOST WIFE: THE SHOCKING TRUTH BEHIND THE GRAVE AND THE FORGED DEATH

The silence in the nursery grew so heavy that the ticking of the wall clock sounded like falling stones.

Matteo Varric, a man who controlled shipping lanes, real estate empires, and political dynasties, looked entirely unmoored. He stared at the parchment birth certificate in his hand as if the ink were turning to blood.

“It has to be a sick joke,” Matteo muttered, pacing toward the floor-to-ceiling windows that overlooked the sprawling, fog-draped Varric estate. “A psychological attack by my corporate rivals. They know Elena died. They know how it destroyed me.”

“Look at the silk sachet, Mr. Varric,” Liana said quietly, stepping forward just enough to guide his attention back to the physical evidence. “People who want to terrorize a billionaire leave USB drives with extortion demands or poisoned items. They don't leave custom silk sachets filled with dried lavender and rosemary.”

Matteo stopped pacing. He looked down at the small silver pouch in his palm. Slowly, with fingers that shook slightly, he untied the red ribbon.

Inside lay a tiny, hand-knitted woolen bootie. Blue with white trim.

Liana gasped softly. The breath caught in her throat. She knew that exact shade of blue. She knew that exact pattern.

Matteo’s gaze snapped to her. “You recognize it?”

Liana swallowed hard, her eyes stinging with sudden, hot tears she thought she had run out of twenty-two days ago. “My son… the baby I buried twenty-two days ago. I knitted a pair of booties identical to that for him. One is in his grave. The other… I lost at the community clinic the day he passed.”

The atmosphere in the room shifted instantly from tension to a surreal, terrifying nightmare.

Matteo stepped closer to Liana, his dark eyes searching her face with an intensity that bordered on madness. “What are you saying, Liana? Explain it to me, because my brain is refusing to connect these dots.”

“Think about the timeline,” Liana said, her voice trembling but clear. “Your wife supposedly died in a car crash seven months ago. My baby died in the hospital twenty-two days ago—the exact day your son began crying uncontrollably. The exact day a hooded woman broke into this nursery and left this token.”

“That implies…” Matteo stopped, unable to voice the grotesque hypothesis forming in his mind.

“It implies that someone swapped children,” Liana whispered the words she had been too terrified to think. “Or worse… that none of us know the truth about what happened in that hospital.”

Before Matteo could process the implication, a sharp chime echoed through the nursery. It wasn't the grandfather clock, and it wasn't a standard alarm. It was the secure internal comm-link connected to the estate’s front security gate.

Matteo hit the speaker button on the wall panel.

The voice of the head of security crackled through the intercom, breathless and panicked. “Mr. Varric! We have an emergency at the main gates. A woman just approached the perimeter. She didn't try to sneak in. She’s standing right under the camera, unarmed, demanding entry.”

“Who is it?” Matteo demanded, his voice returning to its iron-hard authority. “Shoot on sight if she crosses the line!”

“Sir, you need to see the monitor yourself,” the guard stammered. “She’s not trying to hide her face. She’s looking straight up at the camera. Sir… she looks exactly like Mrs. Elena Varric.”
