Chapter 6 - THE HOSPITAL SWAP: THE HORRIFIC SECRET OF ST. JUDE’S

The silence in the nursery became absolute, save for the hum of the climate-control vents.

Matteo lowered the barrel of his gun by a fraction of an inch, his disbelieving gaze snapping back and forth between his wife and the grieving woman holding his son.

“What is she talking about, Liana?” Matteo demanded, his voice dropping into a lethal whisper. “Answer her.”

Liana didn't drop her gaze. Instead, a heavy, devastating calmness settled over her features. She looked down at Nico, who was staring up at Elena with wide, unblinking eyes—not crying, but recognizing.

“Twenty-two days ago,” Liana began, her voice steady and quiet, “I gave birth at St. Jude’s Hospital. It was a difficult labor. When I woke up, the doctors told me my baby didn't survive. They handed me a death certificate and a small, sealed casket for burial.”

Matteo stared at her. “What does that have to do with my son?”

“Everything,” Elena answered, stepping further into the room, her eyes swimming with tears. “Because twenty-two days ago, I was being held captive in a safehouse by your corporate enemies, Matteo. They broke into the hospital nursery where our real son was recovering from routine jaundice. They planned to use him as leverage to force you to sign away your shipping empire.”

Elena choked back a sob, wiping her cheek with the sleeve of her wet coat.

“I escaped my captors and made it to St. Jude’s just as they were executing the kidnapping,” Elena continued. “I fought them off in the hallway. But in the chaos, the baby was dropped. A woman—a desperate mother whose own child had just passed away in the adjacent ward—happened to walk past.”

Matteo’s breath caught in his throat. He looked from Elena to Liana, the horrifying jigsaw puzzle pieces finally clicking into place.

“The hospital staff… to cover up their catastrophic security breach and negligence during the kidnapping attempt,” Liana finished the sentence for her, “panicked. They swapped the files. They gave my deceased baby to the state morgue, and they placed your son in my arms, telling me he was mine to bury.”

Liana looked up at Matteo, tears finally spilling over her lashes.

“I buried a stranger’s child twenty-two days ago, Mr. Varric. And you hired the biological mother of my child to be his nanny.”
