Chapter 5 - The Confrontation

Two days later, my mother arrived at my home. She didn't knock; she pounded. Her face, usually plastered with a veneer of polite society, was twisted into a mask of pure, unadulterated rage. She didn't care about Oliver’s recovery; she didn't care about the surgery. She cared that she had been humiliated at the boutique.

I opened the door, standing firmly in the threshold. I didn't invite her in.

"You have no idea what you've done," she hissed, her hands shaking. "Diane is devastated. The wedding is in jeopardy because you decided to have a tantrum over a scheduling conflict."

"A scheduling conflict?" I echoed, my voice dangerously soft. "My son's heart was stopped, Mom. He had a hole in his chest. And you chose a dress. That isn't a conflict; that’s a moral vacuum."

She tried to push past me, but I stepped forward, blocking her path. "You are not a victim here. You are a bystander who chose the wrong side. My son is safe, he is alive, and he is finally away from the toxic expectations you placed on us. Get off my property. If you ever come near this house or my son again without an invitation, I will ensure you are legally prohibited from doing so."
