Chapter 6 - The Domino Effect

The weeks that followed were a masterclass in watching a house of cards collapse. Without my financial management, the "glamorous" wedding Diane had been planning evaporated. The reality was that my family had been living well beyond their means for years, relying on the cushion I provided to maintain their lifestyle.

News reached me through the grapevine: the expensive venue was canceled, the caterers pulled out, and the dress—the five-thousand-dollar symbol of their vanity—was never purchased. They were forced to scale down to a backyard affair, a modest reality that they viewed as a tragic humiliation. They blamed me, of course. To them, I was the villain—the selfish daughter who destroyed a fairy tale because of a "small" oversight.

I didn't care. I spent those weeks focusing on Oliver’s rehabilitation. We went for walks in the park, his gait growing stronger every day. I started a new, quiet life, stripping away the obligations that had kept me trapped. I began to realize that the biggest problem hadn't been their absence at the hospital; it had been my insistence on maintaining a relationship with people who were fundamentally broken.
