Chapter 3: The Siege in the Dark

(Clara doesn't hesitate. The absolute terror in Grandpa’s voice shatters her frozen paralysis. She clutches the baby to her chest, turns, and sprints up the icy cobblestone path toward the massive oak doors of the manor. Behind her, the crunch of heavy tactical boots on snow echoes like a ticking clock.)
(Grandpa is right behind her, his age showing in his ragged breathing. He shoves Clara through the front doors into the grand foyer and slams them shut, throwing the heavy brass deadbolts. The house is entirely dark. Lauren has already cut the main power.)
Clara: (Panting, leaning against the cold marble wall, her baby whimpering softly.) Grandpa... what is happening? Who are those men?
Grandpa: (He ignores her question, marching toward a decorative suit of armor standing in the hallway. He reaches behind its iron helmet and pulls a hidden lever. A section of the oak paneling slides open, revealing a narrow, dimly lit service corridor.) The panic room. In the east wing study. Move, Clara!
(They plunge into the narrow corridor just as the sound of shattering glass echoes from the front foyer. The mercenaries have broken the side windows. Heavy, methodical footsteps begin moving through the house.)
(As they run through the dust-choked passage, Clara’s mind races. The cold is seeping into her bones, but the adrenaline burns hot. She looks at the old man leading her. He is bleeding from a deep scrape on his hand, his tailored suit ruined.)
Clara: Lauren said they work for your competitors. Grandpa, what did she mean? What does she want besides the money?
Grandpa: (Wheezing as they climb a narrow spiral staircase.) She doesn't want the money, Clara. She wants the legacy. She wants to erase me. Five years ago, I orchestrated a hostile takeover of Vanguard Industries. I gutted their company. The CEO took his own life.
(Clara freezes for a fraction of a second, almost tripping on a step. She hugs the baby tighter.)
Clara: Vanguard? That was... that was Lauren’s father’s company. Before you adopted her.
Grandpa: (He doesn't look back.) Yes. I thought taking her in, giving her the world, would make amends. I thought I could buy her loyalty. I was a fool. She’s been playing the long game. She allied with the remnants of Vanguard’s board. They don't just want to take my company. They want to bury me in my own home and make it look like a tragic home invasion.
(They reach the end of the corridor. Grandpa kicks open a false door disguised as a bookshelf, and they stumble into his grand study. The room is vast, lined with leather-bound books and smelling of scotch and old paper. Grandpa rushes to the heavy mahogany desk and hits a button underneath it. Thick steel shutters immediately slam down over the massive bay windows, sealing them in.)
(He walks over to a large oil painting of his late wife, swings it open, and begins spinning the dial of a wall safe.)
(Suddenly, the intercom on the desk crackles to life. Static fills the room, followed by Lauren’s smooth, mocking voice.)
Lauren: (V.O.) You always were dramatic, Grandpa. The steel shutters? Really? It’s going to take my men at least ten minutes to cut through those doors. We could just talk about this like civilized adults.
(Grandpa pulls a heavy revolver from the safe, checking the cylinder with trembling hands. He pulls out a stack of documents—thick, legal files sealed in wax.)
Clara: (Staring at the gun.) Are you going to shoot them? There are too many!
Lauren: (V.O.) Clara? Are you listening, sweetie? You look so pathetic, shivering in the cold with that blanket. Did Grandpa tell you the truth yet? Did he tell you why Arthur and I were really trying to put you in a clinic?
Grandpa: (Screaming at the intercom.) Shut your mouth, Lauren!
Lauren: (V.O.) Oh, he hasn't told her. How classic. Clara, honey, you found the registration in the glovebox. You're so smart. But did you ever ask yourself why Arthur, the most expensive lawyer in the state, was spending his time looking into your medical history?
(Clara looks at Grandpa. He avoids her eyes, shoving the thick stack of legal documents into a leather satchel.)
Clara: What is she talking about, Grandpa?
Lauren: (V.O.) He’s legally uncoupling you from the estate, Clara! Arthur drafted the papers three days ago. Grandpa wasn't trying to protect you from me. He was going to use my claims about your mental health to have you declared legally incompetent. He was going to take the baby and throw you in an asylum! He played us both!
(Clara backs away from Grandpa. The old man looks up, his face a portrait of guilt and desperation.)
Grandpa: Clara, listen to me. I had to secure the bloodline. You were falling apart after Thomas died! You couldn't handle the pressure. The estate needs a strong guardian, not a weeping widow!
(A heavy, mechanical whirring sound reverberates through the heavy study doors. The mercenaries have arrived. Sparks begin to fly from the hinges as a thermal torch bites into the steel.)
Clara: You... you were going to lock me away? You let Lauren gaslight me so you could build a legal case against me?
Grandpa: (He steps forward, holding out the heavy revolver and the leather satchel.) I did what I had to do for the family! But Lauren has outmaneuvered us both. Clara, take the gun. Take the satchel. Inside are the bearer bonds and the emergency proxy transfers. There is a trapdoor under the Persian rug. It leads to the old wine cellar and out to the river.
(The thermal torch cuts through the top hinge. The massive door shudders.)
Grandpa: Take my grandson. Protect the legacy. I will hold them off. Go!
(Clara stands frozen. The sparks illuminate the dark room in violent flashes of orange. She looks at the gun in Grandpa’s outstretched hand. She looks at the heavy satchel of money and power. The baby in her arms begins to cry, a sharp, piercing sound.)

(The bottom hinge of the door gives way with a sickening crack. The heavy steel groans, leaning inward. Clara slowly reaches out. But she doesn't take the gun. She doesn't take the satchel.)
(She takes a deep breath, and her posture completely changes.)
