Chapter 4: The Architect

(With a deafening crash, the heavy oak and steel doors collapse inward, slamming against the hardwood floor in a cloud of dust and smoke. Four mercenaries step into the study, their tactical rifles raised, laser sights sweeping the room.)
(Lauren steps through the smoke a moment later. She has shed her heavy fur coat, looking sharp and lethal in a tailored black suit. She smiles triumphantly, stepping over the ruined door. She looks at Grandpa, who is aiming the trembling revolver at her chest. Then she looks at Clara, who is standing completely still, clutching the bundled baby blanket.)
Lauren: Put the antique away, Grandpa. It’s over. You lost. Sign the proxy transfers to me, and I promise I’ll make sure Clara gets a very comfortable room at the psychiatric clinic.
Grandpa: (His hands shaking, his voice filled with venom.) You are a parasite, Lauren. I gave you everything, and this is how you repay me?
Lauren: You killed my father! You stole my birthright! Now, drop the gun, or my men will shoot Clara, the baby, and then you.
(Grandpa hesitates. He looks at Clara, his eyes begging for forgiveness. Slowly, painfully, he lowers the revolver. It clatters to the floor. He kicks the leather satchel containing the proxy documents toward Lauren.)
Grandpa: Take it. May it rot your soul.
(Lauren laughs. It is a cold, victorious sound. She bends down to pick up the satchel. But before her fingers can graze the leather, a voice cuts through the room. It is steady. It is calm. It holds no fear.)
Clara: Don't touch that, Lauren.
(Lauren stops. She looks up, her brow furrowing in confusion. Grandpa turns to look at Clara. The shivering, terrified, broken widow from the driveway is gone. Clara stands perfectly straight. The manic panic in her eyes has vanished, replaced by an expression of cold, calculating dominance.)
Lauren: Excuse me? Clara, are you having an episode? The big strong men with guns are here. The game is over.
Clara: (She looks at the lead mercenary, the massive man with the thermal torch.) Did she authorize the wire transfer to your firm's escrow account, Commander?
(The lead mercenary lowers his rifle. He reaches up and pulls off his tactical mask. He looks directly at Clara, ignoring Lauren completely.)
Commander: Yes, ma'am. The funds cleared an hour ago. We have a paper trail tying the illegal payment directly to her personal accounts.
(Lauren freezes. The blood drains from her face. She looks at the Commander, then back to Clara. She takes a step back, suddenly realizing she is the only person in the room not in on the joke.)
Lauren: What... what is this? I hired you! Arthur hired you!
Clara: Arthur works for whoever pays him the most, Lauren. Did you really think you were smart enough to buy out a private military firm without me noticing?
Grandpa: (Staring at Clara, his voice trembling.) Clara... what have you done?
Clara: (She finally looks at Grandpa, her eyes devoid of any familial warmth.) I secured the bloodline, Grandpa. Just like you wanted.
(Clara slowly unwraps the thick wool blanket she has been clutching to her chest for the last hour. She pulls the fabric back. There is no baby. There is only a high-end, heavy digital audio recorder, currently playing the looped sounds of an infant crying. She clicks a button on the side. The crying stops. The silence in the room is absolute.)
Lauren: (Hyperventilating, her eyes wide with terror.) Where is the baby?!
Clara: My son is perfectly safe at the townhouse in the city, under heavy guard. I wouldn't bring him into the cold just to catch a rat.
(Clara tosses the blanket and the speaker onto the desk. She walks forward, her heels clicking sharply against the hardwood floor. She stops inches away from Lauren.)
Clara: You thought you were so clever, Lauren. Forging documents, gaslighting me, trying to convince the old man I was insane. But you were too slow. I knew Grandpa was planning to cut me out and take my son. I saw the proxy drafts on his desk weeks ago.
Grandpa: You... you knew?
Clara: I knew I was surrounded by traitors. My husband dies, and immediately, my sister-in-law and my father-in-law plot to steal my child and my inheritance. So, I let you play your little games. I acted crazy. I cried. I let you think you were winning.
(Clara bends down and picks up the leather satchel containing the bearer bonds and the signed proxy transfers. She unzips it, checks the documents, and smiles.)
Clara: I needed Grandpa to witness your betrayal, Lauren. I needed him to be so terrified of your hostile takeover that he would pull the emergency proxies out of the safe. And I needed you, Lauren, to initiate an armed assault on this estate, catching yourself on dozens of security cameras and wiretaps.
Lauren: (Tears welling in her eyes, her voice breaking.) You set me up. You used my anger against me.
Clara: I just gave you the rope, Lauren. You tied the noose perfectly. By tomorrow morning, the police will have the footage of you leading an armed squad into this house. They will have the bank records of you paying for a corporate assassination. You’re going to federal prison for the rest of your life.
(Clara turns to Grandpa. The old man has collapsed into his leather chair, clutching his chest. He looks smaller than he ever has in his entire life.)
Clara: And you, Grandpa. You will sign the rest of the board seats over to me tonight. If you don't, I will tell the authorities that you orchestrated this entire siege as an insurance fraud scheme. Who are they going to believe? The ruthless billionaire, or the traumatized, grieving mother?
Grandpa: (Tears streaming down his wrinkled face.) You are a monster, Clara.
Clara: No. I am the strong guardian this estate needs. I am exactly what you built me to be.
(Clara turns to the mercenaries.)
Clara: Bind her. Leave the old man his phone so he can call his cardiologists. We’re leaving.
May you like
(The mercenaries grab Lauren roughly, zip-tying her wrists behind her back. Lauren doesn't fight. She just stares at Clara, completely broken by the realization that she was never the predator. She was just the bait.)
(Clara zips up the satchel containing the keys to the empire. She walks out of the ruined study, stepping over the shattered oak doors, and disappears into the dark, silent halls of the mansion, leaving the two people who tried to destroy her buried in the ruins of their own trap.)
