Chapter 2: The Descent of the Blinds

(The penthouse of the Four Seasons Private Residences hums with the specific, insulated frequency of Manhattan’s elite. It is a baby shower, though one would be forgiven for mistaking it for a museum gala. Pyramids of champagne flutes catch the afternoon sunlight. Caterers in stark white uniforms weave silently through the crowd, offering impossibly small hors d'oeuvres on silver trays. The air is thick with the scent of lilies and the sharp, bright laughter of people who have never had to worry about the cost of anything.)
(In the center of the room, holding court beside a mountain of pastel-wrapped gifts, stands CHLOE. She is twenty-six, radiant, and draped in a custom silk maternity gown that clings perfectly to her six-month baby bump. She keeps one hand resting protectively over the child, a gesture of practiced maternal grace. Beside her is DAVID. He is forty-two, wearing a bespoke navy suit that costs more than a decent car. His hand rests on the small of Chloe’s back. He plays the role of the proud, protective patriarch flawlessly.)
(The heavy, brass-studded doors of the penthouse swing open. The sound is barely noticeable at first, masked by the clinking of crystal and the soft jazz playing from hidden speakers. But then, the temperature in the room seems to drop.)
(EVELYN steps across the threshold.)
(She is forty, dressed in a razor-sharp, obsidian-black tailored suit that stands in violent contrast to the soft pastels of the party. Her hair is pulled back into an unforgivingly tight chignon. Her face is a mask of absolute, terrifying calm. She does not look like a scorned ex-wife. She looks like a corporate assassin.)
(The murmurs near the door die instantly. The silence spreads across the room like a spilled inkwell, moving outward until the entire penthouse is completely, suffocatingly quiet. Even the jazz seems to fade out.)
(David looks up from a conversation with a hedge fund manager. His smile freezes. The color immediately drains from his face, leaving his tanned skin a sickly, ashen gray. His hand drops from Chloe’s back.)
David: (His voice is a harsh, urgent whisper that carries in the silence.) What is she doing here? Who let her up?
Chloe: (Her smile faltering, her manicured fingers digging into the fabric of her gown.) David... you said security had her photo. You said she was barred from the building.
(Evelyn does not acknowledge the whispers. She does not look at the guests who are staring at her with a mixture of horror and morbid fascination. She walks with a slow, measured cadence directly toward the raised dais at the back of the room, where a podium and a large projection screen have been set up for a slideshow of ultrasound photos.)
(She reaches the podium. She sets a sleek, silver remote down on the polished wood. She taps the microphone. A sharp, high-pitched feedback squeal echoes through the room, making several guests wince.)
Evelyn: (Her voice is smooth, rich, and entirely devoid of trembling.) Good afternoon, everyone. I apologize for the intrusion. I know I wasn't on the guest list. But considering the nature of today’s celebration, I felt it was only appropriate that I bring a gift of my own.
(David steps forward, leaving Chloe’s side. His fists are clenched at his sides. He tries to project authority, but his eyes betray a frantic, cornered panic.)
David: Evelyn, you need to leave. Right now. You are trespassing. This is a private event, and you are embarrassing yourself.
Evelyn: (She rests her hands on the edges of the podium, leaning forward slightly.) Am I, David? Because from where I’m standing, the only people who should be embarrassed are the ones who built a life on a foundation of theft.
(The sharp click of the projector remote echoes through the hushed penthouse.)
(The massive floor-to-ceiling windows behind the podium, once showcasing the glittering Manhattan skyline, are suddenly obscured. A heavy, motorized blackout blind descends with a low, mechanical hum, plunging the room into an artificial twilight. A massive projection screen flares to life behind Evelyn.)
(The bright white light of the projector illuminates the dust motes in the air. On the screen, a high-resolution, scanned medical document appears. The text is sharp and undeniable. The bold letterhead at the top reads, in crisp blue ink: CRYO-GENESIS FERTILITY INSTITUTE.)
(David stops dead in his tracks. The breath leaves his lungs in a sharp, audible hiss. His eyes widen, reflecting the bright light of the screen. He knows exactly what that document is. He thought it had been destroyed.)
David: (Lurching forward, his voice cracking with sudden, uncontainable panic.) Turn that off! Evelyn, I swear to God, turn it off right now!
Evelyn: (Stepping smoothly out of his reach, picking up the microphone, her voice amplified, calm and icy.) Or what, David? You’ll divorce me? Oh, wait. You already did that. And you took the brownstone, the boat, and my dignity in the process. You told the judge I was unstable. You told our friends I was frigid. But it seems you forgot to mention one tiny asset in the settlement negotiations.
Chloe: (Clutching her pregnant belly, her flawless, practiced smile replaced by a look of sheer terror. She looks around the room frantically.) David, make her stop! What is she doing? Security! Somebody call security!
(A murmur ripples through the crowd of elegantly dressed guests. But no one moves. The wealthy thrive on scandal, as long as it isn't their own. They are entirely captivated, their champagne flutes forgotten.)
Evelyn: (Raising a hand, gesturing elegantly to the screen behind her.) If you direct your attention to the document, ladies and gentlemen, you’ll see a standard medical release form for cryopreserved embryos. Specifically... my embryos.
(The screen zooms in with a click of the remote. The text enlarges. The signature line is blown up to massive proportions. Two signatures are clearly visible: Evelyn Reed and David Reed. Slashed across the center of the document is a heavy red stamp that reads: RELEASED FOR IMPLANTATION: OCTOBER 12TH.)
David: (Sweat beading on his forehead, his custom suit suddenly looking too tight. He raises his hands in a placating gesture, his voice dropping to a desperate plea.) Evelyn, please. This isn’t the place. We can talk about this in private. My lawyers can call your lawyers. We wanted a family. You… you never wanted to be a mother. We didn’t want them to go to waste!
Evelyn: (Lowering the microphone slightly, her eyes locking onto David’s with the intensity of a predator watching its prey bleed out.) I never wanted to be a mother? Is that the lie you tell yourself to sleep at night? You forged my signature, David.
(The crowd gasps collectively. A heavy, suffocating weight settles over the room.)
Evelyn: You bypassed the legal hold on our medical assets during the divorce. You paid off a junior clinician at Cryo-Genesis, and you stole them. You stole my unborn children out of a freezer because you couldn't be bothered to wait for your new little plaything to conceive naturally.
(All eyes immediately snap to Chloe. The young woman looks like a deer caught in the headlights of an oncoming train. Her hands shake violently against her silk dress.)
Chloe: (Tears immediately springing to her eyes, streaming down her perfectly contoured face. Her voice trembles with absolute, heartbreaking sincerity.) I didn’t know! Evelyn, I swear on my life, I didn't know!
(Chloe takes a stumbling step forward, looking desperately at the crowd, playing the frightened, manipulated victim to perfection.)
Chloe: He told me they were anonymous donor eggs! He told me we were doing the right thing! We wanted a baby so badly, and he said the clinic had a surplus! I thought I was helping!
(The guests murmur in sympathy. A few of the older women exchange horrified, judgmental glances at David. The narrative is shifting exactly as Chloe intends: David is the monster, and she is merely the innocent vessel, the naive young woman who was lied to by a powerful man.)
David: (Turning to Chloe, aghast, completely blindsided by her sudden betrayal.) Chloe, don't do this. Don't play dumb. You were with me at the clinic!
Chloe: (Sobbing openly now, covering her face with one hand while keeping the other firmly on her stomach.) How could you do this to me, David?! How could you put her baby inside of me without my consent?! I feel violated! You used my body!
(The crowd is fully on Chloe's side now. Hostile glares are directed at David. A few men step forward, positioning themselves defensively between Chloe and David. Evelyn watches this masterful performance unfold from the podium. She doesn't interrupt. She simply lets Chloe spin her web of lies, letting the young woman dig the grave as deep as it can possibly go.)

(When Chloe finally pauses to draw a ragged, dramatic breath, Evelyn leans back into the microphone. A slow, razor-sharp smile spreads across her face.)
Evelyn: Oh, Chloe. You always did deserve an Oscar for that trembling lip.
