Chapter 4: The Sterile Truth

(The guests are entirely motionless, trapped in the gravitational pull of Evelyn’s chilling calm. David stands in the center of the room, clinging to the concept of his impending fatherhood like a man clutching a piece of driftwood in a hurricane.)
Evelyn: (Looking down at David from the podium, her voice steady and deliberate.) David... did you ever stop to wonder why we had to do IVF in the first place?
David: (He frowns, his bravado faltering slightly. He glances around the room, feeling the sudden, inexplicable shift in the power dynamic.) What does that have to do with anything?
Evelyn: Why did we spend three years trying to conceive naturally? Why did we spend hundreds of thousands of dollars on specialists, on hormone therapies, on perfectly timed injections, before we finally resorted to freezing those embryos?
David: (His jaw tightens defensively.) Because of your... your hostile environment. Dr. Aris said your body wasn't cooperating. He said your lining was too thin. You were the one who couldn't carry a child. That's what the doctors told us!
Evelyn: (She chuckles bitterly. The sound is devoid of any joy.) Dr. Aris said exactly what I paid him to say, David. He said it to protect your fragile, pathetic ego.
(David stares at her, uncomprehending. Chloe looks back and forth between them, a cold dread beginning to pool in her stomach. The baby kicks violently against her ribs, as if sensing the impending collapse of the world outside.)
(Evelyn clicks the remote one final time.)
(The black screen vanishes. A new medical file appears on the projection screen. It is stark white, filled with dense medical jargon and numeric charts. But the name at the top is undeniable: Patient: David Reed.)
(A bold, yellow highlighted box sits in the center of the screen, impossible to miss. It reads:)
DIAGNOSIS: COMPLETE NON-OBSTRUCTIVE AZOOSPERMIA. PATIENT IS ENTIRELY STERILE.
(The crowd gasps audibly. A woman in the front row actually covers her mouth, dropping her crystal champagne flute. It shatters against the hardwood floor, a sharp, violent sound that breaks the spell.)
David: (Staring at the screen, his jaw going completely slack. His eyes dart back and forth across the highlighted text, refusing to process the letters.) What is that? That’s… that’s a fake. You mocked that up.
Evelyn: (Her voice drops the last ounce of civility. It is the cold, hard strike of a gavel.) You have been completely sterile since you had the mumps at twenty-two, David. Your body produces zero viable sperm. You have never produced a viable swimmer in your entire life.
David: (Shaking his head frantically, stumbling backward.) No! No, we gave samples! The clinic took my samples!
Evelyn: And the clinic disposed of them, per my private instructions. I hid the truth from you because you were so obsessed with your family's legacy. You wouldn't shut up about your precious bloodline and your father's trust fund. I knew the truth—that you were shooting blanks and always would be—would break your fragile sense of masculinity. So, I took the burden on myself. I let you and your awful mother blame my 'hostile environment.'
Chloe: (Whipping her head toward David, pure, unadulterated horror in her wide eyes.) What is she saying? David, what is she saying?!
Evelyn: I’m saying, Chloe, that when we created those embryos, we didn't use David's biology. We had to use a sperm donor.
(The room begins to spin for Chloe. She looks down at her massive, swollen belly. The silk fabric of her maternity gown suddenly feels like a straitjacket.)
Evelyn: We used an anonymous, six-foot-two, blonde, blue-eyed medical student. Number 4094 from the Manhattan Cryobank.
David: (Falling to his knees right in the middle of the party. He clutches his chest as if he has literally been shot. His breathing comes in ragged, wheezing gasps.) No... no, that's impossible. Half of them were mine. You told me! You looked me in the eyes and told me they were mine!
Evelyn: I lied to protect you. And you repaid my protection by divorcing me, stealing my biological child, and putting him in the womb of your twenty-six-year-old mistress.
(Chloe stumbles backward, her mind violently rejecting reality. She bumps heavily into a silver tray of champagne glasses. The tray tips. Dozens of crystal flutes crash to the floor, shattering in the deafening silence of the room. Champagne pools around her expensive heels like water from a broken dam.)
(Chloe looks down at her stomach, her hands trembling violently. She is suddenly overcome with physical revulsion. She realizes, with crushing certainty, that she has ruined a marriage, destroyed her own reputation, and gone through six months of physical agony... all to act as an unpaid surrogate for her worst enemy and a total stranger.)
Chloe: (Screaming at David, her voice tearing at her vocal cords. She kicks at the shattered glass.) You told me he was yours! You told me this would secure the trust fund! I did this for the money! I did this for the legacy! You’re nothing! You’re completely empty!
David: (Sobbing on the floor, his hands covering his face. His entire identity, his wealth, his ego, all annihilated in a matter of seconds.) Evelyn... please...
Evelyn: (Walking to the edge of the stage, looking down at the broken, weeping couple with absolute detachment.) The trust is void, David. Your father's stipulations required a biological heir. I've already forwarded this medical file to the board of trustees. You are cut off. The marriage was built on a lie. And as for the child...
(Evelyn reaches into the inner pocket of her sleek evening suit. She pulls out a folded, heavy legal document, stamped with the seal of the State of New York.)
(She tosses it into the air. It flutters down like a dying bird, landing squarely on David’s heaving chest.)
Evelyn: I’ve already filed the emergency injunction. The DNA proves the child is mine and a donor's. Neither of you have any biological or legal claim to the infant you stole. Furthermore, the police are currently waiting in the lobby to arrest you both for medical fraud, grand larceny, and the forgery of medical release forms.
(The distant, rhythmic ding of the private penthouse elevator echoes through the room. Heavy, synchronized footsteps begin to march down the marble hallway.)
Evelyn: (She drops the microphone. It hits the stage with a heavy, reverberating thud that seals their fate.) Enjoy your baby shower, Chloe. I’ll see you in the delivery room to collect my son.
May you like
(Evelyn turns her back on the ruined couple. She walks down the steps of the dais. The crowd of wealthy elites parts for her instantly, their faces pale with awe and terror. She walks out of the penthouse, the doors closing behind her, leaving David sobbing brokenly on the floor and Chloe screaming hysterically into her hands as the police enter the room.)
