Chapter 3: The Echo of Deceit

(The penthouse is a powder keg, and Evelyn holds the only match. Chloe’s tears, which had so effectively garnered the sympathy of the elite crowd just seconds prior, suddenly seem to freeze on her cheeks. She looks at Evelyn, her wide, innocent eyes narrowing infinitesimally.)
Evelyn: (Her voice dripping with a lethal, aristocratic condescension.) It really is a stunning performance. The victimized surrogate. The manipulated ingenue. If I didn't know better, I almost would have felt sorry for you.
David: (Stepping toward the podium, his voice gaining a sudden, desperate aggression.) That’s enough, Evelyn! You’ve made your point. You’ve ruined the shower. Now get out before I have you physically removed and arrested for harassment!
Evelyn: (She ignores David entirely, keeping her gaze fixed on Chloe.) I always wondered how you justified it to yourself, Chloe. Stealing another woman's husband is one thing. That’s just a lack of moral fiber. But stealing her biological child? Allowing doctors to implant it into your own body? That requires a special kind of sociopathy.
Chloe: (Her voice dropping the trembling, tearful cadence. It becomes sharper, defensive.) I told you, I didn't know! You're crazy! You're just a bitter, barren woman who couldn't keep her husband happy!
(The crowd gasps again, shocked by the sudden venom in the young woman's voice. The mask of innocence is beginning to slip.)
Evelyn: (Without breaking eye contact, Evelyn clicks the silver remote in her hand.) Let's see just how little you knew.
(The Cryo-Genesis document on the massive projection screen vanishes, replaced by a stark, pitch-black screen. A sound wave graphic appears in the center, pulsing silently for a second. Then, an audio file begins to play. The acoustics of the penthouse are flawless. The crisp, undeniable sound of Chloe’s voice echoes through the room, bouncing off the marble pillars and the crystal chandelier.)
Audio Recording (Chloe): Are you sure she won’t find out? I mean, they’re biologically hers. What if she audits the clinic during the asset division?
(The color violently drains from Chloe's face. She stumbles backward as if she has been physically struck. Her hands fly to her mouth. The guests in the room freeze in collective horror.)
Audio Recording (David): Evelyn is locked in litigation with the firm. She’s bleeding money and barely sleeping. By the time she even thinks about the clinic, you’ll be in your third trimester.
Audio Recording (Chloe): (A soft, cruel laugh echoes through the speakers.) It’s almost poetic. She pays for the harvest, the hormones, the retrieval... and I get the prize. Just make sure the forgery on the release forms is perfect, baby. If the board finds out the heir isn't biologically yours, the trust fund stays locked.
Audio Recording (David): The forgery is flawless. She'll never know. We get the kid, I get the trust, and Evelyn gets nothing.
(The audio cuts out with a sharp, static click. The sound wave graphic flatlines. The silence that follows is deafening, heavier than lead. Chloe’s fake tears have completely vanished. Her face is a portrait of unadulterated terror. She looks like a porcelain doll that is about to shatter into a million pieces.)
(The crowd of wealthy guests, who mere moments ago were ready to protect Chloe, now stare at her with profound, visceral disgust. The illusion is entirely broken.)
David: (Stammering, stepping back from his wife, his hands trembling as he looks at the black screen.) Evelyn... where did you... how did you get that? We were in the car...
Evelyn: (Pacing slowly across the stage, her heels clicking rhythmically against the polished wood.) Did you really think you could conduct your little criminal conspiracy on the dashcam audio of the Tesla I bought for your birthday, David? The one registered to my corporate account? Cloud storage is a beautiful thing. It updates every time the vehicle connects to the Wi-Fi in the garage.
(David looks as though he might vomit. He grabs the edge of a catering table to steady himself, his knuckles turning white.)
Chloe: (Her entire demeanor shifts. The frightened girl is gone, replaced by a cornered, venomous animal. Her voice drops an octave, echoing with pure spite.) So what?
(The guests murmur in shock at her brazenness.)
Chloe: So what?! You have a tape. What are you going to do, Evelyn? Sue us? Go ahead. Tie it up in court. Bleed yourself dry paying lawyers by the hour.
Evelyn: (Raising an eyebrow, amused by the young woman's audacity.) You think this is just a civil matter, Chloe?
Chloe: (Stepping forward, rubbing her pregnant belly not with maternal love, but with possessive defiance.) By the time it gets through the courts, this boy will be born. He’s in my body. I’m carrying him. I am providing the blood, the nutrients, the oxygen. I am the birth mother. The law favors the incubator, Evelyn. It favors the woman who goes through the labor. You’ll never take him from us. No judge in the state of New York is going to rip a newborn out of its mother’s arms and hand it to a cold, sterile ex-wife!
(David, seeing a twisted logic in Chloe's argument, seizes upon it. He straightens his tie, forcing his spine to straighten, attempting to reclaim the shattered remains of his authority.)
David: She’s right. It was a desperate move, Evelyn. I admit it. And I am sorry for how it happened. I truly am.
Evelyn: (A humorless laugh escapes her lips.) You're sorry you got caught.
David: But he is half mine! Biologically, genetically, that is my son in there. I contributed to those embryos just as much as you did. A judge won’t tear a child away from his biological father. It’s my right to raise him!
(Evelyn stops dead in her tracks. She stands at the center of the dais, the black screen looming behind her. She tilts her head, looking at David. The anger in her eyes has vanished. It is replaced by an expression of profound, chilling pity. She looks at him not as a threat, but as a tragic, pathetic creature.)
Evelyn: (Her voice is barely above a whisper, but it carries to every corner of the silent room.) Your son.
May you like
David: (Puffing his chest out slightly, clinging to the one undeniable fact he believes he holds.) Yes. My son. Our bloodline. The heir to the Reed legacy.
(Evelyn sighs deeply into the microphone. It is a heavy, mournful sound that makes the hairs on the back of David's neck stand up. The air in the room turns arctic.)
