Chapter 1 - The Invisible Sister

Every family has a golden child and a workhorse.
In my family, Vanessa was the gold, and I was the dirt she walked on.
Ever since we were little, Vanessa got the spotlight.
She got the pageants, the expensive dresses, the private tutors, and the endless praise.
I got the hand-me-downs, the chores, and the expectation that I would always just "handle it."
So when Vanessa got engaged to David, a wealthy architect, my parents were ecstatic.
They bragged to everyone in our small town.
They promised her the wedding of the century.
A destination wedding in Hawaii, at a five-star oceanfront resort.
There was only one problem.
My parents were drowning in debt.
They had spent their entire lives financing Vanessa’s perfect image.
They had nothing left in the bank.
And Vanessa? She hadn't worked a day in her life.
David was wealthy, yes, but he was traditional.
He believed the bride’s family should handle the planning and the initial deposits.
Vanessa was terrified he would find out she was actually broke.
So, my parents came crying to me.
"Mara, you have that tech job. You have savings. Just front the money."
"We will pay you back, we promise."
I knew they wouldn't.
But they wore me down with tears, guilt trips, and emotional manipulation.
"Don't ruin your sister's happiness, Mara. Be a good sister for once."
So, I gave in.
But I wasn't stupid.
I didn't just hand over a blank check.
If my money was on the line, my name was on the paper.
I called the Hawaiian resort.
I spoke to the caterers.
I hired the florists, the band, the photographers.
Every single contract was signed by me.
Every single deposit was linked to my platinum credit card.
To the vendors, Vanessa was just the model wearing the dress.
I was the CEO of the event.

I held the keys to the entire operation.
And nobody in my family bothered to read the fine print.
