Chapter 2 - The Aesthetic Flaw

Fast forward ten months, and we were finally in Hawaii.
The resort was breathtaking.
White sand, crystal blue water, palm trees swaying in the tropical breeze.
It was everything Vanessa had dreamed of.
And I was exhausted.
I had spent the last 48 hours coordinating flights, dealing with lost luggage, and making sure the floral arrangements survived the humidity.
I hadn't slept.
I was running around the resort in simple jeans and a white T-shirt, carrying a clipboard and two cell phones.
I didn't mind the hard work.
I just wanted one simple "thank you."
But I should have known better.
The rehearsal dinner was scheduled for that evening.
David’s entire family had flown in.
They were elegant, refined, and completely unaware of my family's financial reality.
I walked into the grand dining hall to do a final check on the table settings.
Vanessa was standing there with her bridesmaids.
She was wearing a custom silk gown that I had secretly paid for.
She took one look at me and her face twisted in disgust.
"What are you wearing?" she snapped.
I looked down at my clothes. "I've been setting up the arch. I'll change before dinner."
"You look like the help, Mara."
Her bridesmaids giggled.
My mother walked over, looking embarrassed. Not for me, but of me.
"Mara, please," my mother whispered. "David's parents are here. Can you just stay out of sight?"
My heart dropped.
"Stay out of sight? I literally built this event."
Vanessa rolled her eyes.
"You're ruining the aesthetic. You're so stressed and messy. This is supposed to be high-class."
"You don't even fit in with my bridal party."
I stared at my sister.
The girl whose entire life I had subsidized.
"Are you serious right now?" I asked, my voice dangerously low.
"Dead serious," Vanessa sneered.
May you like
"In fact, don't even bother coming to the wedding tomorrow. You're just going to drag the vibe down."
"You're unnecessary, Mara. Go home."
