Chapter 10 - The Dawn of Vance Logistics

The morning sun broke through the gray winter clouds over Lake Michigan, painting the sky in ribbons of pale gold and slate blue.

At seven-thirty in the morning, a black Cadillac Escalade pulled up to the curb outside the main entrance of the Willis Tower.

A doorman in a braided coat rushed forward to open the rear passenger door.

Claire stepped out onto the sidewalk.

She wore a dark charcoal cashmere coat, tailored trousers, and Eleanor Vance's pearls resting proudly against the collar of her black silk blouse.

Behind her walked Harold Sterling and a team of eight senior forensic accountants from New York.

The lobby of the tower was already buzzing with news crews, financial journalists, and television cameras from CNBC and Bloomberg.

Microphones were thrust toward her face the moment she passed through the revolving doors.

"Mrs. Whitmore! Is it true you executed a hostile takeover of your husband’s company?"

"Claire Vance! Did Alexander Whitmore commit corporate fraud during the 2022 public offering?"

"Is the South Chicago terminal reopening today?"

Claire paused at the foot of the security turnstiles.

She didn't rush.

She didn't hide behind her briefcase or her legal team.

She turned toward the bank of cameras, her face perfectly composed, her gaze steady and terrifyingly clear.

"My name is not Mrs. Whitmore," she said into the microphones, her voice ringing clear across the crowded marble lobby.

"My name is Claire Bennett Vance."

"And Whitmore Logistics no longer exists."

"As of six o'clock this morning, the company has reverted to its original corporate charter."

"It will operate under the name Vance Maritime and Logistical Operations."

"Every ground lease has been secured."

"Every truck driver, terminal worker, and logistics coordinator will receive their back pay by twelve noon today, along with a fifteen percent cost-of-living adjustment."

"The company was built on the sweat of honest workers and the heritage of my family."

"It will no longer be used to finance private jets, offshore shell companies, or vanity projects for men who cannot keep their word."

A reporter pushed forward.

"Where is Alexander Whitmore?"

Claire looked directly into the camera lens.

She knew where he was.

Harold’s private investigators had tracked him to a thirty-dollar-a-night motel off Interstate 80 in Joliet.

He had spent the night sleeping in his wet suit on a stained mattress, his phone dead, his pockets empty, drinking tap water from a plastic cup.

"Mr. Whitmore is no longer affiliated with this enterprise in any capacity," Claire said calmly.

"His shares have been extinguished to satisfy the outstanding liabilities of his breach of trust."

"He is now a private citizen."

"And whatever life he builds from this day forward will be built entirely on his own merits."

"Without my grandfather's land."

"Without my grandmother's jewelry."

"And without me."

Claire turned away from the cameras and swiped her new executive keycard against the glass gate.

The turnstile flashed green.

She walked through the lobby toward the private elevator bank that led to the forty-fifth floor.

As the doors closed, separating her from the flashing bulbs and the noise of the street, Claire reached up with her right hand.

She touched the smooth, cool spheres of Eleanor's pearls.

They were warm against her throat now, carrying the heat of her own blood.

May you like

The eight years of silence were over.

The shadow had stepped into the light.
