Chapter 12 - The Forensic Reckoning

On the forty-fifth floor of the Willis Tower, the atmosphere was completely transformed.

The heavy mahogany furniture Alexander had ordered from Italy had been removed.

The walls, once adorned with vanity portraits of Alexander shaking hands with governors and sports celebrities, now displayed framed architectural schematics of the Great Lakes shipping ports.

Claire sat at the head of the conference table.

Around her sat ten forensic investigators from the Vance Trust, three banking regulators, and Arthur Pendelton, the senior board member who had stood by Alexander at the Drake Hotel gala.

Arthur looked exhausted, his silver hair uncombed, a half-empty mug of black coffee sitting before him.

"Claire," Arthur said carefully, clearing his throat.

"The board understands your anger."

"We understand that Alexander breached his fiduciary duty."

"But if the Department of Justice unseals that indictment, the stock will drop another forty percent before noon."

"Thousands of retail investors will lose their savings."

"Are you prepared to destroy the entire legacy to punish one man?"

Claire looked at Arthur over the rim of her porcelain teacup.

Eleanor’s pearls rested serenely against her collarbone.

"The legacy was already hollow, Arthur," Claire said calmly.

"Alexander didn't build a logistics company."

"He built a personal spending machine that cannibalized vendor payments to maintain the illusion of profitability."

She opened a thick black ledger and slid it toward him.

"Look at page thirty-four."

"In October of last year, while Alexander was hosting the autumn gala in Lake Geneva, he delayed the pension contributions for eight hundred dockworkers in South Chicago."

"He used that capital to secure a lease on a Gulfstream IV private jet."

"Did you know about that, Arthur?"

Arthur looked down at the documents, his face flushing crimson.

"I... the audit committee didn't flag the transaction."

"Because Alexander had Richard Cole bury it inside maintenance depreciation schedules," Claire said evenly.

"I am not destroying this company, Arthur."

"I am amputating a gangrenous limb before the entire body rots."

She turned to the chief forensic investigator, Marcus Reed.

"Marcus, what is the status of the recovered assets?"

Marcus adjusted his glasses and pulled up a live spreadsheet on the large flat-screen monitor mounted on the wall.

"We have executed liens against all properties registered under Apex Global Logistics," Marcus reported.

"The Gold Coast penthouse will be listed for sale tomorrow morning."

"The Lake Geneva estate has been formally returned to the Vance Housing Trust."

"We have also repossessed three high-end luxury vehicles registered as executive perks."

"What about Ava Sinclair?" Arthur asked quietly.

Claire’s expression remained entirely neutral.

"Ava complied with every term of our agreement," Claire stated.

"She surrendered Eleanor's pearls without damage."

"She provided the digital receipts for every wire transfer Alexander sent to her styling agency over the last eighteen months."

"Those receipts establish the clear intent of corporate embezzlement."

"In exchange, the trust will not seek civil forfeiture of her personal checking accounts."

"She has twenty-four hours to vacate the Gold Coast property and leave the state."

"Where is she going?" Arthur asked.

"She is moving back to her parents' house in suburban Ohio," Marcus interjected, checking a flight manifest.

"Her social media agency dropped her representation this morning after the story broke."

"Her brand deals have all terminated under morality clauses."

"She leaves Chicago at three o'clock on an economy bus."

Claire looked out the floor-to-ceiling windows at the gray expanse of Lake Michigan.

Ships moved slowly across the horizon, carrying raw ore, grain, and steel across the waterways her grandfather had mapped half a century ago.

"And Alexander?" Claire asked quietly.

Marcus turned to a fresh page in his file.

"He spent the night at a roadside motel in Joliet."

"He attempted to contact Richard Cole at nine-fifteen this morning from a public payphone."

"Our private security team reports that he just checked out of the motel on foot."

"He has no vehicle."

"He has no working credit cards."

"And the Cook County Sheriff has just received the arrest warrant for corporate asset dissipation."

Arthur Pendelton bowed his head.

"What do you want to do with him, Claire?"

Claire stood up from the table.

She smoothed down the front of her navy blazer.

Her voice was steady, free of malice, and completely devoid of regret.

"I don't want to do anything with him, Arthur."

"The law will do what the law does."

"I gave Alexander eight years of devotion, hard work, and quiet grace."

"He believed those things were weaknesses."

"Now, he will learn what happens when the foundation of a house decides it no longer wants to carry the weight of a fool."

She turned to the board members.

"Gentlemen, open your folders to Section Three."
