Chapter 6 - The Penthouse Siege

Alexander drove his Mercedes through the pouring Chicago sleet like a madman.
Tires screeched against the wet asphalt of Michigan Avenue.
Red lights meant nothing to him anymore.
His world was shrinking to a single, terrifying thought: Get the pearls.
He slammed the car into park inside the underground garage of the Gold Coast luxury tower.
He had bought Ava this penthouse unit six months ago using an off-the-books shell company.
He had told himself she deserved a quiet sanctuary away from the prying eyes of the press.
Now, the thought of that apartment made his stomach burn with nausea.
The private elevator took forty seconds to reach the forty-second floor.
Those forty seconds felt like forty days in purgatory.
Alexander pushed through the elevator doors and used his master keycard to shove the heavy oak door open.
The scent of synthetic vanilla and overpriced perfume filled the air.
Ava was lounging on a white bouclé sectional sofa, her long legs draped over the armrest.
She was wearing a silk robe.
Her phone was mounted on a ring light directly in front of her.
She was in the middle of a live video stream.
"...and that’s why I always tell my followers that self-worth comes from knowing your value," Ava purred into the camera, tilting her neck to let Eleanor's pearls catch the ring light’s glare.
"When a powerful man recognizes your shine, he makes sure the whole world sees it."
Alexander didn't care about the broadcast.
He marched across the polished hardwood floor, grabbed the tripod by its neck, and slammed it face down onto the marble table.
The glass screen of the phone shattered instantly.
The stream cut dead.
Ava shrieked, springing up from the sofa with wide, furious eyes.
"Alexander! What the hell is wrong with you?"
"I was in the middle of a live Q&A with eighty thousand viewers!"
"Shut up!" Alexander roared, his voice cracking from raw panic.
He looked unhinged.
His tie was undone.
His tailored Italian wool coat was soaked in sleet.
His hair hung over his forehead in damp, tangled strands.
"Take them off," he commanded, pointing a trembling finger at her throat.
Ava blinked, stepping backward toward the kitchen island.
"Take what off?"
"The pearls, Ava! The damn pearls!"
Ava’s expression hardened immediately.
Her sweet, submissive influencer persona vanished in a fraction of a second.
She reached up with both hands, clutching the string tightly against her collarbone.
"No," she said firmly.
"You gave them to me."
"They belong to me now."
"You don't understand, you stupid girl!" Alexander shouted, stepping toward her.
"Those aren't just jewelry!"
"They are a corporate legal seal attached to an active commercial covenant!"
"If I don't deposit them into the vault of Sterling, Cross & Vance by five o'clock today, the entire shipping fleet is grounded by the Cook County Sheriff!"
Ava laughed, a shrill, arrogant sound that sent a shiver down Alexander's spine.
"Do you think I'm an idiot, Alexander?"
"I read the financial news this morning."
"Bloomberg posted a breaking alert ten minutes ago."
"Whitmore Logistics trading has been suspended."
"Your board is holding an emergency vote of no confidence."
Alexander stopped cold.
"You... you read that?"
"Of course I did," Ava sneered, her eyes narrowing into cold slits.
"I didn't spend three years playing the adoring mistress just to end up with a bankrupt loser."
"You told me your wife was a nobody."
"You told me she was a charity case you married out of pity."
"You lied to me!"
"You made me wear the very chain that puts her boots on your neck!"
"Ava, give me the pearls," Alexander pleaded, his voice suddenly losing its venom, replaced by pure, desperate begging.
"I will wire you two million dollars right now."
"Cash."
"Direct to your offshore account in the Caymans."
"Just unclip the necklace and hand it to me."
Ava smiled, a slow, cruel smirk that mirrored the look she had given Claire at the Drake Hotel.
"Two million?" she scoffed.
"Alexander, you don't even have two hundred dollars right now."
"My business manager tried to process your monthly transfer thirty minutes ago."
"Your bank accounts are frozen."
"The domestic court issued an ex-parte asset preservation order on Claire's request."
"You're broke."
"You're finished."
Alexander lunged forward.
He reached out with both hands, desperate to tear the necklace from her neck.
Ava didn't scream.
She didn't flinch.
She simply reached into the pocket of her silk robe and pulled out a small black canister.
Before Alexander could grab her collar, she sprayed a thick stream of defense pepper gel directly into his open eyes.
Alexander let out a guttural howl of agony.
The chemical burned like boiling oil against his corneas.
He fell to his knees, clawing at his face, knocking over a ceramic floor vase that shattered into a hundred pieces around him.
"Get out of my apartment, Alexander," Ava's voice drifted down to him, calm and chillingly devoid of emotion.
"And don't bother coming back."
"Because thirty minutes ago, I received a call from Harold Sterling."

"Your wife made me an offer."
"An offer that actually clears the bank."
