Chapter 5 - The Bullet That Changed Everything

The sharp crack of a suppressed rifle echoed across the rail yard a fraction of a second before Viktor could pull the trigger.
A clean bullet pierced Viktor’s right shoulder, spinning him off balance and sending his gun clattering across the concrete.
Marcus lowered his sniper rifle from the rooftop of the adjacent warehouse, blowing a wisp of smoke from the barrel.
Joseph didn't hesitate; he closed the remaining distance in three massive strides, slamming his fist into Viktor’s jaw with bone-crushing force.
Viktor collapsed unconscious onto the dirt, blood pooling beneath his cheek as the fight drained out of the opposing syndicate.
“Mom!” Audrey sobbed, throwing her arms around Rose’s neck as Marcus quickly cut the plastic zip-ties binding her wrists.
“My baby... my sweet Audrey,” Rose cried, burying her face in her daughter’s hair while holding her with desperate strength.
Joseph stood a few feet away, watching the two of them embrace with a heavy, overwhelming lump in his throat.
Rose slowly raised her head, her tear-filled eyes finally meeting Joseph’s across the dim, smoke-filled clearing.
“You found us,” Rose whispered, her voice trembling as memories of twenty years ago rushed back to the surface.
“I told you I would burn Chicago down,” Joseph said softly, taking a slow step closer to them. “Why did you leave, Rose? Why did you make me think our child died?”
Rose lowered her gaze, pulling Audrey protectively against her side as the cold night wind swept through the yard.
“Viktor threatened to kill you, and then kill the baby before she was even born,” Rose explained, her voice breaking. “He had moles inside your inner circle. Running was the only way to keep you both alive.”
Joseph knelt down on one knee in the dirt, reaching out to gently touch the edge of the constellation tattoo on her wrist.
“We don't have to run anymore,” Joseph said, looking between Rose and Audrey with fierce determination. “Viktor is finished, and my empire is strong enough to protect what belongs to me.”
Marcus walked up, hauling the groggy, bleeding form of Viktor up by his expensive collar. “Boss, what do we do with this trash?” Marcus asked.
Joseph stood up, his face hardening back into the cold, ruthless mask that had made him a legend in the underworld.
“Ship him to the Siberian docks,” Joseph ordered coldly. “And make sure he never sets foot in North America again.”
“Understood,” Marcus replied, dragging the whimpering criminal toward the waiting transport vans.
Rose looked up at Joseph, seeing the power and the danger that she had tried so hard to escape two decades ago.
“Is it really over, Joseph?” Rose asked, her v

oice laced with lingering fear.
“It’s only the beginning,” Joseph answered, wrapping his strong arm around both Rose and Audrey, pulling them close against his chest.
Back at the grand estate, the heavy oak doors closed behind them, shutting out the violent world of the Chicago mafia.
Elena rushed forward with warm blankets and hot tea, her eyes wide as she realized the missing puzzle pieces of her boss's life had finally returned home.
Audrey sat by the massive stone fireplace, holding a steaming mug of tea between her hands while staring at the flames.
“So,” Audrey said, looking up as Joseph walked into the study carrying the old Polaroid photograph. “Are you actually going to teach me how to run this empire, or are you just going to keep staring at me like I’m a ghost?”
Joseph let out a genuine, deep laugh that echoed warmly through the grand halls of the mansion for the first time in twenty years.
“I think,” Joseph smiled, pulling up a chair beside her, “we have a lot of lost time to make up for first.”

Rose walked into the room, standing behind them with a gentle smile as the heavy shadows of the past finally dissolved into the warmth of family.
The war was won, the secrets were laid bare, and the Salvini family was finally whole again beneath one heavily guarded roof.
