Chapter 1 - The Golden Cage

The Howard Mansion was a place of blinding wealth and suffocating secrets. Elena never asked for the money. She never asked for the giant chandeliers or the imported marble floors. She had only asked for love. When Arthur Howard, a billionaire real estate mogul, fell in love with Elena, the world gasped. She was twenty years younger, a talented but struggling architect who had designed his new corporate headquarters. He was a widower with a grown daughter, and that daughter was Vanessa.

From the very first day Elena stepped into the mansion, the air felt freezing. Vanessa hated her, seeing Elena not as a stepmother, but as a parasite—a gold digger who was going to steal the family fortune. But Elena only had eyes for Arthur. He was kind, gentle, and gave her a sense of security she had never known.

Everything changed six months ago when Elena found out she was pregnant. When Arthur heard the news, he cried tears of joy and immediately called his lawyers to update his will. He wanted to ensure his new child and his beloved wife would never have to worry about a single thing. Vanessa was listening outside the study doors when that call happened. Her face twisted into a mask of pure, unfiltered rage as she realized half of her inheritance—or perhaps all of it—was about to vanish.

In Vanessa's twisted mind, this unborn child was a thief, and Elena was the mastermind. Vanessa decided right then and there that the baby would never be born. She started her campaign of terror slowly. At first, it was just small things. Elena’s prenatal vitamins would suddenly go missing from the bathroom counter, and strange, bitter-tasting herbs found their way into Elena’s morning tea. Elena, being perceptive, stopped drinking the tea and started keeping her vitamins locked in her personal desk.

She didn't want to worry Arthur, whose heart condition had been worsening, and the doctor had strictly told him to avoid all stress. Elena decided to handle Vanessa on her own. She tried to be kind and talk to her stepdaughter, but you cannot reason with a snake. Vanessa’s cruelty only grew more aggressive, whispering awful things when Arthur wasn't looking. "You're not going to make it to the delivery room," Vanessa would hiss in the hallways. "Accidents happen to clumsy girls like you all the time."

Elena felt the cold grip of fear. She realized this wasn't just a bitter stepdaughter; this was a predator. Elena was not going to let anyone harm her unborn child. She knew she needed to protect herself and outsmart a woman who had endless money and power. The game of survival had begun.
