Chapter 5 - The Courtroom of Marble

Every single camera had been recording. Every conversation had been saved. Every lie had been captured in crisp 4K resolution. Vanessa thought she was creating a victim, but instead, she was creating undeniable proof.

Sirens suddenly screamed outside the mansion, shattering the quiet afternoon. Red and blue lights flashed through the massive stained-glass windows. Vanessa froze, dropping her phone in panic. "What... who called them?" she stammered. Before she could run, the heavy front doors burst open. Detective Ruiz entered, followed closely by six armed officers.

Vanessa immediately threw herself onto the floor next to Elena, wailing loudly. "Help her! Please help her!" Vanessa sobbed hysterically. "She tripped! I tried to catch her but she fell!"

Ruiz looked at Vanessa with absolute disgust. He didn't call for the paramedics. Instead, he simply crossed his arms and waited. Confused by the lack of medical urgency, Vanessa looked up. "Why are you just standing there?! My stepmother is dying!"

"She's not dying, Vanessa," a strong, steady voice echoed through the foyer. Vanessa gasped and backed away as Elena slowly opened her eyes. Placing her hands on the marble floor, Elena pushed herself up, dusted off her cardigan, and looked perfectly calm.

"How... you fell! You hit your head!" Vanessa stammered, going pale.

"I know how to fall," Elena said coldly. "And I know how to prepare for a snake." Elena pulled out her tablet and pressed a single button. In the adjacent living room, the massive smart TV turned on, its volume turned all the way up. The video played for everyone to see. It showed Vanessa screaming, "There is no child!" It showed the vicious, intentional push. And it showed Vanessa standing at the top of the stairs, coldly calculating her next move while Elena lay on the ground.

Vanessa watched her own crime play out in vivid detail. Her fake tears dried up instantly, and her jaw dropped in absolute horror. "You set me up..." Vanessa whispered, stepping backward.

"No," Detective Ruiz said, stepping forward and pulling out his handcuffs. "You set yourself up. We also have the footage of you stealing the diamond necklace. And the audio of you planning to poison her tea."

"You can't do this!" Vanessa shrieked, fighting the officers as they grabbed her arms. "Do you know who my father is?!"

"I do," a new, heartbreaking voice spoke from the doorway. Everyone turned. It was Arthur. He hadn't gone to Switzerland. Elena had told him everything the night before, begging him to stay hidden in a city hotel and watch the live feed. Leaning on his cane, tears streaming down his face, Arthur looked at his daughter with a shattered heart.
