Chapter 2 - The Whispers in the Walls

Elena knew that complaining to Arthur without proof would destroy him. Vanessa was his daughter, his own flesh and blood. If Elena accused her of attempted murder, it would break Arthur’s fragile heart, and Vanessa would easily lie her way out of it. Vanessa was a master manipulator, beloved by high society. To the outside world, she was a philanthropist and a sweet heiress, but behind closed doors, she was a monster.
Knowing she needed undeniable, concrete evidence, Elena started working quietly. She used her background as an architect, knowing every single inch of the Howard Mansion—the blind spots and where the walls were hollow. While Vanessa was out at country club luncheons, Elena hired private technicians, telling Arthur it was for "smart home upgrades" for the nursery. But it wasn't just the nursery.
Elena installed microscopic, high-definition cameras in the living room, the hallways, the grand foyer, and on the massive, sweeping staircase. The cameras were completely invisible, blended seamlessly into the intricate crown molding, and hardwired to a private server only Elena could access. She also began recording every single phone call, keeping a hidden backup phone strapped to her body under her maternity clothes.
Weeks went by. The trap was set, but Vanessa was cunning and started setting her own traps. One afternoon, a priceless diamond necklace went missing from Arthur's safe. Vanessa immediately pointed the finger at Elena, producing fake pawn shop receipts and crying, "She's siphoning our assets, Dad!" Arthur was confused, but his trust in Elena remained strong.

Elena didn't panic. She simply pulled up the hidden camera footage on her private tablet and watched, alone in her room, as the footage showed Vanessa stealing the necklace and hiding it inside her own designer handbag. Elena smiled coldly, deciding not to show the footage to Arthur yet. A simple theft wasn't enough to put Vanessa away forever; she needed Vanessa to attempt the ultimate crime.
As Elena’s baby bump grew and the due date approached, Vanessa’s desperation became palpable. She paced the halls at night and fired the loyal household staff, replacing them with people she could bribe. Feeling the net tightening, Elena reached out to Detective Ruiz, an honest cop and old friend of her late father’s. She sent him the theft video as a down payment of trust. "I am in danger," she told him over an encrypted line. "But if you come now, she walks free. Wait for my signal." Ruiz agreed to stay on standby as the tension in the mansion thickened. Two women, living under one roof, waiting for the other to break.
