Chapter 2 - The Arrival of the Serpent

By 7:00 p.m., the grand gala had transformed the DeLuca estate into a suffocating, glittering labyrinth of heavy silk gowns, top-shelf bourbon, expensive French perfume, and loud, incredibly wealthy voices.

Twelve massive pillar candles burned steadily above elaborate centerpieces of white roses and untouched crystal champagne flutes. The towering crystal chandeliers overhead cast shimmering golden light across the black marble floors while the string quartet near the staircase played a lively, upbeat classical waltz that barely cut through the rising tide of cocktail chatter. The warm, circulating air carried a rich mixture of beeswax, earthy rosemary drifting from the massive professional kitchens down the hall, deep oak smoke from the hearths, and the sharp, cloying citrus perfume worn by the elite guests. Lena completely disappeared into the chaotic, punishing rhythm of service, her feet moving on autopilot as she wove through the densely packed crowd, trading her own thoughts for a smile and an empty glass.

Then Victoria Bellini arrived.

She made a grand, theatrical entrance in a backless, liquid-silver evening gown that practically screamed for attention, marching straight up to Adrian beneath a blinding burst of synchronized camera flashes from the press gathered outside. She threw her arms around his neck and planted a familiar, possessive kiss directly on his cheek, playing the part of the untouchable society darling to absolute perfection.

Approximately ten minutes later, Victoria was standing near the edge of the dance floor when she watched Lena step up to Adrian and silently hand him a fresh glass of neat whiskey without uttering a single word of inquiry, instantly knowing his preference by pure, silent habit. Victoria’s sharp, predatory eyes narrowed as she watched the exchange.

“She knows your drink?”

Adrian took the heavy crystal glass, his thumb brushing the rim before he took a slow, measured sip.

“She works here.”

His voice was flat, devoid of any warmth.

“She knows everyone’s drink.”

But the moment Lena turned her back and retreated toward the shadows of the room, Victoria caught the unmistakable way Adrian’s dark gaze tracked her movement across the entire length of the ballroom. A slow, venomous smirk curled the edges of Victoria’s painted lips. She waited with calculated patience until Lena reemerged from the service corridors carrying a fresh, glistening tray of champagne flutes.

The quartet was playing a slow, sweeping melody beneath the blinding glare of the central chandelier. The warm air from the fireplace continued to drift, carrying the heavy scent of oak smoke mixed with the sharper, artificial tang of chilled citrus and expensive perfume. Victoria deliberately stepped directly into Lena’s narrow path, her silver-sequined gown catching the light like fish scales.

Lena stopped abruptly, keeping her balance so the tray wouldn't brush against the delicate fabric of the woman’s expensive dress.

“Excuse me.”

Victoria refused to budge an inch. Her cold, calculating gaze traveled slowly from Lena’s flushed face down to the perfectly polished champagne glasses resting on the silver tray.

“Adrian seems unusually interested in the domestic staff tonight.”

Lena calmly shifted the heavy tray into her other hand to distribute the physical strain across her arm.

“You should discuss Adrian’s personal interests directly with Adrian.”

“I’m discussing your unacceptable behavior with you right now.”

Several wealthy socialites standing nearby subtly angled their bodies toward the confrontation, pretending to converse among themselves while listening intently to every single word. Lena distinctly heard the sharp, sudden clink of ice striking crystal over at the far bar, signaling that the room’s attention was rapidly shifting entirely toward them.

“My behavior consists entirely of serving champagne.”

Without warning, Victoria reached out, snatched a single flute directly from the tray, and held it suspended in the air for one agonizing second. Then, with deliberate malice, she opened her fingers and let it drop.

The crystal shattered violently across the black marble floor between them, sending razor-sharp shards scattering in every direction. A wealthy woman standing nearby gasped softly, her hand flying to her throat. Cold, effervescent champagne splashed aggressively across the hem of Lena’s black uniform and the leather of her sensible work shoes. The sharp, bitter citrus scent of Victoria’s suffocating perfume hung heavily in the suffocating space between them.

Victoria looked down her nose at the sparkling debris littering the floor.

“Clean it up.”

Lena calmly placed her serving tray down on a nearby mahogany side table, her movements terrifyingly steady.

“Of course.”

She bent down slightly and reached toward a folded white linen napkin resting on the service cart.

Victoria’s pointed silver stiletto heel came down with sudden, crushing force right over the edge of the cloth, pinning it firmly against the marble floor.

“No.”

Lena slowly paused, her eyes shifting down to the glittering shoe holding the cleaning cloth hostage.

“Use your bare hands.”

A few muffled, cruel laughs traveled through the tight circle of onlookers who had gathered like vultures to watch the spectacle unfold.

“Better yet,” Victoria continued, raising her voice so the surrounding guests could clearly savor every humiliating syllable. “Get down on your knees where you belong. Perhaps then everyone in this room will finally remember why you’re actually here.”

Lena slowly straightened her back, her posture stiffening into absolute, unbreakable steel. The golden candlelight caught the tiny, dangerous crystal fragments scattered all around the soles of her shoes.

“Move your foot.”

Victoria smiled a cold, triumphant smile, feigning absolute ignorance.

“Excuse me?”

“You’re standing on the cleaning cloth.”

“And you,” Victoria hissed, stepping closer, “are standing in a room where you seem to have completely forgotten your lowly position in life.”

Lena ignored the insult entirely. She reached out and grabbed a second, untouched linen napkin from the service station with absolute calm. She placed it carefully and deliberately directly over the glittering pile of broken crystal so that none of the distracted guests would accidentally step on the glass and injure themselves.

She did not kneel. Not for an inch.

“My professional position requires me to clean up after the guests who rent this space.”

Her dark eyes rose, locking onto Victoria’s trembling gaze with unyielding fire.

“It does not, however, require me to surrender my human dignity to them.”

The murmurs and cruel laughter died instantly, replaced by a suffocating, dead silence. Victoria’s face flushed a deep, ugly shade of crimson, her mask of polite sophistication cracking entirely under the weight of public defiance.

“You actually think because the boss glances in your direction a few times that you have the right to speak to me like this?”

Lena’s hand hovered steadily above the covered glass.

“Whatever Mr. DeLuca chooses to do is entirely his own decision.”

She paused, her voice dropping an octave into a tone of absolute, chilling authority.

“This refusal is entirely mine.”

Victoria’s eyes flashed with pure rage, and she snatched another champagne flute from a passing tray. Before her fingers could even close around the stem, a massive, heavy hand materialized from nowhere and closed like a steel vice around her wrist.
