Chapter 6 - The Siege at Midnight

The heavy oak doors of the library flew open before Adrian could even respond, revealing his head of security, Marcus, breathless and pale under the dim hallway sconces.

“They bypassed the outer checkpoints, boss,” Marcus reported rapidly, his hand instinctively resting on the concealed firearm beneath his tailored suit jacket. “Federal marshals, backed by local tactical units. Victoria Bellini must have handed them the master encryption keys to the perimeter grid on her way out. They’re swarming the front courtyards right now.”

Adrian didn't flinch. His expression remained as cold and immovable as a granite monument carved out of the mountain. He slowly turned his head to look at Marcus, his voice steady and icy.

“Lock down the main vault, secure the eastern wing, and ensure every single guest is guided safely out through the subterranean service tunnels toward the back parking lot. I don't want a single civilian scratched.”

“And you, sir?” Marcus asked, his sharp eyes darting briefly toward Lena standing frozen near the desk.

“I’ll meet them in the grand foyer,” Adrian said coldly.

Marcus nodded once, spun on his heel, and sprinted down the corridor to coordinate the defense.

The distant, chaotic sound of shouting voices and heavy boots echoing across the marble foyer filtered into the quiet library like the low rumble of an approaching earthquake. The romantic, candlelit atmosphere of the DeLuca estate was instantly shattered, replaced by the harsh, flashing crimson and blue glare of police cruisers bleeding through the towering arched windows.

Lena stood frozen beside the mahogany desk, her eyes locked on the dark velvet box resting quietly in the pale moonlight. The federal clearance documents that would grant her absolute freedom, clear her father’s name, and buy her a ticket away from the violence sat just inches from her fingertips.

Adrian stepped toward her, his dark eyes intense and urgent.

“Take the box, Lena,” he commanded, his voice dropping into a desperate register she had never heard before. “Marcus has the service tunnel cleared. There’s a car waiting by the eastern treeline with false plates and enough cash to get you across the border before morning. Go.”

Lena didn't move an inch. Her fingers remained flat against the cold wood of the desk, her jaw set into an unyielding line of defiance.

“You really think after everything we just said... after everything we just shared in this room... that I’m going to tuck tail and run the moment things get difficult?” she demanded, her voice ringing with sharp, crystalline fury.

“This isn't about being difficult, Lena! This is a federal indictment!” Adrian shouted, finally breaking his iron composure as he grabbed her shoulders. “If you are found in this house when those doors get kicked in, you’ll be arrested as an accessory, your name will be dragged through the mud, and every single thing we fought for tonight will be destroyed!”

“Then let them destroy it!” Lena cried out, stepping closer and wrapping her arms tightly around his waist, burying her face against the solid warmth of his chest. “I didn't spend eight months watching you from the shadows just to walk away the second you decided to play the noble martyr. If they take you, they take us both.”

Adrian froze, his large hands hovering in the air for a fraction of a second before wrapping around her back with bone-crushing intensity, pulling her flush against him as if he could weld her into his very skin to protect her from the coming storm.

Outside in the grand foyer, the massive double doors rattled violently under the heavy, rhythmic pounding of federal battering rams, accompanied by a booming voice echoing through a megaphone.

“Federal Bureau of Investigation! Open the doors immediately, Adrian DeLuca! You are surrounded!”

Adrian pressed a fierce, lingering kiss into her hair, his voice rough with suppressed emotion.

“Stubborn to the very end,” he murmured against her ear.

“Must be a side effect of working for you,” Lena whispered back, pulling away just enough to look him dead in the eye.

Adrian gave a slow, dangerous nod. He reached down, grabbed the heavy velvet box off the desk, and tossed it unceremoniously into the blazing hearth fire. The thick cardboard folders and documents instantly caught, sending a brief, brilliant flash of golden light dancing across their faces as the decades of federal secrets and false accusations burned into harmless ash.

“If we’re going down,” Adrian muttered, a dark, fearless smirk finally breaking across his face, “we do it on our own terms.”

He grabbed her hand, his fingers locking tightly around hers, and together they turned away from the fire and marched out of the library toward the thunderous noise of the crashing front doors.
