Chapter 2 - The Fortress of Solitude

The drive to the safe house was a blur of neon lights and heavy silence. I didn't take them to our old penthouse, nor to any property listed under my name. Instead, I drove to a subterranean bunker disguised as a warehouse in the industrial district—a black-site testing facility for my security firm, entirely off the grid.

As the heavy steel doors slid shut behind my SUV, isolating us from the outside world, Elena finally let out a breath she seemed to have been holding for two years.

I stepped out and opened her door. She hesitated before handing Sofia to me. My hands shook as I took my daughter for the very first time. She was light, too light for a one-year-old, wrapped in a filthy blanket, but as she opened her eyes—bright, piercing blue, just like mine—my heart shattered and rebuilt itself in the same second.

"She's beautiful, Elena," I choked out, a tear escaping my iron control. "You kept her safe. You saved her."

"I almost didn't," Elena sobbed, collapsing against the side of the car. I caught her with one arm, holding my daughter with the other, and guided them into the living quarters.

Within minutes, my most trusted medical personnel—a private doctor who owed me his life—arrived. Dr. Aris asked no questions. He set up an impromptu clinic, examining Sofia first, then Elena.

"Malnutrition, severe vitamin deficiency, and signs of prolonged psychological trauma," Dr. Aris reported quietly to me as Elena slept on the medical cot, holding a freshly fed and bathed Sofia. "Physical scars on her wrists and ankles. She was chained, Daniel. For a long time."

The rage I had suppressed flared up, threatening to consume me. I walked over to the bedside and knelt. Elena’s eyes fluttered open. Even exhausted, her gaze searched frantically until she saw Sofia sleeping safely in the crib beside her.

"They kept me in a basement," Elena whispered into the quiet room, her voice raspy. "For the first six months. They told me you had moved on. That you were engaged to a senator's daughter. They brought me newspapers with doctored photos. When Sofia was born, Margaret came to the farmhouse. She looked at our baby, disgusted, and told the guards to dispose of us once she was weaned. She wanted to ensure there was no heir."

"She will pay," I promised, stroking her matted hair. "For every second you were in the dark, she will spend a year behind bars. I will dismantle her empire piece by piece."

"She has millions, Daniel. She has politicians in her pocket."

May you like

"I have billions," I replied softly, but my eyes were hardened steel. "And I own the network that holds their secrets. Rest now, my love. By the time you wake up, the war will have already begun."

I left the room, the door locking automatically behind me, and walked into the command center. Giant monitors illuminated the dark room. It was time to unleash hell.
