Chapter 5 - The Echoes of Trauma

The next morning, the world exploded. The dossier I had sent to the press was published on every front page. “BILLIONAIRE MATRIARCH ARRESTED IN SHOCKING KIDNAPPING CONSPIRACY.” The news channels ran non-stop coverage.
Inside the safety of our private bunker, however, the world was quiet. I sat on the edge of the bed, watching Elena feed Sofia. The color was slowly returning to my wife's cheeks, but the haunted look in her eyes remained.
"They're calling it the scandal of the century," I told her gently, setting a tray of warm food on the nightstand. "She's in federal custody. Bail was denied. The judge deemed her a flight risk and a danger to society."
Elena stopped, looking at me with wide, fearful eyes. "She has lawyers, Daniel. The best in the country. What if she gets out? What if she finds a loophole?"
"She won't," I promised, taking her hand. But I felt the tremor in her fingers. The physical rescue was complete, but the psychological healing had barely begun.
For the next two months, we remained in seclusion. We moved to a heavily guarded estate in the countryside, far from the prying eyes of the media. I hired the best trauma therapists for Elena. There were nights when she would wake up screaming, convinced she was back in that dark basement. During those nights, I would hold her, whispering reassurances until the sun came up.
Sofia, thankfully, was resilient. With proper nutrition and endless love, she blossomed into a happy, energetic toddler. Watching her learn to walk on the soft grass of our garden, surrounded by armed guards but finally free beneath the open sky, gave me the strength to prepare for the coming storm.
The trial was approaching. Margaret’s defense team, a shark-tank of high-priced attorneys, was already leaking rumors to the press, trying to paint Elena as a master manipulator who faked her own death to extort the Vance family. It was a vile, desperate tactic, but I knew we had to face it head-on.
"I have to testify, don't I?" Elena asked one evening, staring into the fireplace.
"You don't have to do anything you're not ready for," I replied, wrapping a blanket around her shoulders. "My evidence is enough to put her away."

"No," Elena said, her voice finding a sudden strength. She looked up at me, the firelight reflecting in her dark eyes. "She took my voice for two years. She doesn't get to keep it anymore. I will stand in that courtroom, and I will look her in the eye, and I will tell the world what she is."
I kissed her forehead, overwhelmed by her bravery. "Then we fight together."
