Chapter 3 - The Descent and the Trap

I didn’t rush. I didn’t panic. I simply stepped out of the bedroom suite, wheeling my suitcase smoothly over the plush hallway carpet, and walked toward the top of the stairs. Julian stopped halfway up the ascent, his phone still clutched tightly in one hand, his screen glowing with an unfinished text message. His brow furrowed in a deep, chaotic knot of confusion and lingering malice as he took in the unmistakable sight of my packed luggage. Down in the courtyard below, Victoria heard the commotion, stepped in sharply from the back deck, and dropped her heavy brass watering can. It hit the hardwood foyer floor with a deafening, metallic crash that echoed through the high ceilings. "What in God's name do you think you’re doing?" Julian demanded, his voice echoing sharply in the cavernous, sunlit foyer. I began descending the stairs, the wheels of my suitcase bumping softly and rhythmically against each carpeted step, until I stood directly on the landing, towering a few steps above him. I flashed that same standard, unbreakable, terrifyingly polite smile. "I’ve been thinking about what you said downstairs, Julian, and I’ve come to a firm conclusion: I believe you and your mother are entirely right." Julian’s face contorted into a mask of utter bewilderment, his hand twitching at his side. "Right? Right about what, Elena? What are you babbling about?" "Right about the fact that I cannot possibly be a freeloader in your house," I said, enunciating every single syllable with razor-sharp, chilling clarity, letting my words drop like icicles. "So, I’ve made a very practical executive decision. I am not going to live here, I am not going to cook your meals, and I am certainly not going to play maid to a pair of entitled parasites." Julian’s face drained of color, replaced instantly by a mottled, furious red. "Have you lost your damn mind? We just got married yesterday! Half the city was at our reception!" Victoria shrieked from the foot of the stairs, rushing forward and waving her arms wildly. "Don’t you dare walk out that door, you ungrateful little tramp! My son gave you his name! He elevated your social standing! You belong to this family now!" I turned my gaze slowly toward her, my smile never faltering for a single microsecond. "Ma’am, I walked into this house yesterday to play your game, and today I am walking right back out to reclaim my dignity." "What do you mean, ma’am?" Victoria’s face flushed a deep, terrifying shade of purple, her voice cracking with pure outrage. "I am your mother-in-law! You will address me with respect!" "Not for long," I replied smoothly, adjusting the strap of my backpack. "In fact, legally speaking, as of fourteen hours ago, that title is about to become completely null and void."
