Chapter 6 - The Inner Sanctum and the Counter-Strike

Within twenty minutes, my Uber had deposited me at the grand entrance of The Grandview Hotel, a towering architectural masterpiece of glass and steel right in the heart of downtown. Checking into the penthouse suite using my personal corporate credit card—completely separate from any joint accounts Julian’s family might have tried to monitor—felt like breathing pure oxygen for the first time in years. I stripped off the ruined silk robe, tossed it straight into the hotel room's industrial laundry bin without a second thought, and stepped into the marble shower, letting the high-pressure steaming water wash away every trace of the Sterling household. Afterward, wrapped in a plush white bathrobe, I sat at the executive mahogany desk overlooking the sprawling city skyline and dialed Marcus Vance, the most feared and respected family law attorney in the state. Marcus didn’t just handle divorces; he dismantled predatory dynasties with surgical precision. "Well, well, Elena," Marcus’s gravelly, sharp voice hummed through the phone speaker after I gave him a rapid-fire summary of the past fourteen hours. "Fourteen hours of marriage? That has to be a personal record, even for some of the monsters I’ve dealt with in this city. And let me guess—they didn't have a prenuptial agreement drafted because Julian was entirely convinced you were a docile, easily manipulated bride who would gratefully accept whatever scraps they threw your way?" "Spot on, Marcus," I replied, sipping a freshly brewed black coffee delivered by room service. "Julian assumed that because I loved him, I was completely defenseless. But he forgot one crucial detail: my parents insisted on keeping my personal business assets entirely separate before the wedding, and the $45,000 cashier’s check they gifted me was made out strictly in my maiden name." "Brilliant," Marcus laughed softly on the other end, the sound full of professional delight. "Not only can we file for an immediate annulment based on fraudulent inducement—since he clearly misrepresented his character and intended to treat you as an indentured servant rather than a legal spouse—but we can also initiate a civil suit for intentional infliction of emotional distress and harassment. Furthermore, since they threw your belongings out or forced you to flee under duress, we can legally secure an emergency restraining order against both Julian and his mother." "Do it," I said firmly, my eyes narrowing as I looked out over the skyline. "Strip away every single illusion of control they have. Let's show them what happens when you mistake a woman's kindness for weakness."
