Chapter 7 - The Storm Breaks at the Sterling Estate

Back at the Sterling estate, the panic had officially transformed into a full-scale panic attack. Julian was pacing furiously across the imported hardwood floors of the living room, his phone glued to his ear as he tried for the fortieth time to call my personal cell phone, only to be met by a cold, automated robotic message informing him that the subscriber was no longer accepting calls from his number. Victoria was frantically dabbing her forehead with a designer handkerchief, her face mottled with rage and mounting terror as she realized the catastrophic social implications of my sudden disappearance. "She can't do this, Julian! She’s a nobody! A girl from a middle-class background who got lucky with a small architecture firm! You can't just let her humiliate our family like this in front of the entire neighborhood!" Victoria shrieked, slamming her teacup down onto the glass coffee table so hard the delicate porcelain cracked right down the middle. "Mom, shut up!" Julian roared back, his usual polished composure entirely shattered, revealing the fragile, insecure coward hiding beneath the tailored suit. "You’re the one who told me to set ground rules! You’re the one who told me to throw the towel in her face to show her who's boss on day one!" "I told you to assert control, not act like a caveman in front of an open window where the entire cul-de-sac could watch!" Victoria snarled back, her eyes flashing with venom. Before Julian could fire back another furious retort, the heavy brass door-knocker banged twice with authoritative, deafening force. It wasn't the polite knock of a neighbor dropping off a welcome basket or a wedding gift. It was the sharp, unmistakable knock of the law. Julian froze, his face turning ghostly pale. He cautiously walked over to the entryway and pulled the heavy oak door open. Standing on the porch were two uniformed police officers flanked by a tall, impeccably dressed man in a charcoal-grey bespoke suit holding a thick manila folder. It was Marcus Vance’s senior associate, accompanied by local civil enforcement. "Mr. Julian Sterling?" the lead officer asked, his voice completely devoid of emotion. "Yes? What is this about?" Julian stammered, trying to puff out his chest and project an air of wealthy entitlement that no longer worked. "We are here to serve you with emergency legal documents regarding an immediate petition for annulment, a temporary restraining order filed on behalf of Mrs. Elena Vance-Sterling—who is reverting immediately to her maiden name, Elena Vance—as well as formal notice to preserve all property and prevent the dissipation of any shared assets," the associate stated clearly, stepping forward and thrusting the thick stack of legal papers directly into Julian’s trembling, paralyzed hands.
