Chapter 12 - The Family War Council and the Plan to Strike First

When Michael and Chloe returned home an hour later—Michael carrying groceries and Chloe talking animatedly about a constitutional law case—they found me sitting at the kitchen island, staring blankly at the laptop screen where Dr. Evelyn Vance’s warning video was looping silently in the background.
“Sarah? Honey, what’s wrong?” Michael asked, dropping the grocery bags onto the counter and rushing over when he saw the pale, rigid expression on my face. “You look like you’ve seen a ghost.”
“Not a ghost,” I whispered, turning the laptop screen toward them. “A transmission from Zurich.”
Chloe watched the video in stunned, absolute silence, her hand flying up to cover her open mouth as Dr. Evelyn Vance—the biological mother she had never truly known—warned us of the impending international corporate manhunt.
“That... that’s my birth mother,” Chloe breathed out, her voice trembling. “She’s alive? In Zurich?”
“She was alive when that video was recorded,” I corrected grimly, pulling the small thumb drive out of the USB port. “Marcus Vance—an international fiduciary working for Veritas’s European parent syndicate—dropped this on our front porch twenty minutes ago. They know about Lucy. They know she’s the primary living subject of Petrov’s trials. And their international lawyers are preparing to seize her across national borders.”
Michael’s face drained of color, his hands clenching into tight fists against the edge of the kitchen counter.
“No,” Michael growled, a dangerous, protective fury flashing in his eyes for the first time in his life. “No, they don't. We survived the federal interrogation, we beat their domestic legal team in court, and we’re not about to let some shadow-syndicate steal our baby girl from our own living room.”
“Anger won't stop an international corporate syndicate, Michael,” I said, my voice adopting the razor-sharp tactical discipline I had learned to rely on during high-stakes crises. “If Marcus Vance is operating under international treaty exemptions, American local police won't be able to protect us if their lawyers secure an extradition or a transnational custody writ through corrupt foreign magistrates.”
Chloe wiped a tear from her cheek, her legal training instantly kicking in as she stepped closer to the island counter.
“Mom’s right about jurisdiction, Dad,” Chloe said, her voice steadying with sudden, fierce resolve. “If they’re using old Swiss banking and medical treaty loopholes established by Dr. Petrov in the nineties, fighting them in a standard family court is playing right into their hands. We have to cut off their legal foundation at the root.”
“How do we do that?” Michael asked, looking between Chloe and me. “How do you fight a shadow-syndicate that operates across international borders?”
I reached into my pocket, pulled out the business card Agent Vance had given me before he retired from the HHS Inspector General’s office six months ago, and slid it across the counter.
“We don't wait for them to attack us on our porch,” I said, standing up from my chair and grabbing my car keys. “We strike first. We take the fight directly to the federal prosecutors who helped dismantle the domestic side of Metro Fertility, and we force the State Department to issue a formal transnational alert freezing Veritas’s European accounts under anti-human-trafficking statutes.”
Michael looked at me, seeing the absolute, unshakeable determination in my eyes, and slowly nodded.

“What do you need me to do?” Michael asked.
“Stay here. Lock every door, arm the security system, and keep Lucy with you every second,” I instructed firmly, walking toward the hallway. “Chloe is coming with me to the federal building downtown. We’re going to open a second front in this war—and this time, we’re finishing it permanently.”
