Chapter 13 - The Federal Prosecutor’s Office and the Transnational Trap

The federal courthouse downtown was a towering fortress of granite and limestone, echoing with the hurried footsteps of attorneys, federal agents, and desperate litigants.

Chloe and I strode through the security checkpoints with purpose, our heels clicking sharply against the marble floor as we made our way toward the third-floor offices of the U.S. Attorney’s Organized Crime and Special Prosecutions Division.

Fortunately, Agent Vance had left us with a direct contact inside the federal prosecutor’s office—Assistant U.S. Attorney David Sterling, a seasoned prosecutor who had spent years trying to crack the upper echelons of the Metro Fertility black-market ring.

When Chloe and I walked into his office, Attorney Sterling was knee-deep in a stack of case files, but the moment he looked up and saw my face, he immediately stood up from his desk.

“Mrs. Miller, Miss Miller—what brings you down to the federal building on such short notice?” Sterling asked, gesturing for us to take the leather chairs opposite his desk. “Is everything alright with the baby?”

“The baby is safe for the moment, Mr. Sterling,” I said, leaning forward and placing the Swiss thumb drive directly in the center of his desk blotter. “But our family is under active transnational threat from the exact same corporate network you thought you dismantled six months ago.”

Sterling frowned, picking up the thumb drive.

“Veritas Medical Holdings was liquidated domestically. Their assets were seized.”

“Their domestic assets were,” Chloe interjected sharply, opening her leather portfolio and spreading out printed legal briefs across his desk. “Dr. Viktor Petrov structured his international bio-patent portfolio using Swiss fiduciary shell trusts protected by archaic medical research treaties dating back to the nineteen-nineties. An emissary named Marcus Vance dropped this drive on our porch today, warning us that their European syndicate is activating Phase Two of the Petrov Project to claim infant Lucy as an international corporate asset.”

Attorney Sterling’s expression darkened into a scowl of professional disbelief and outrage.

“International patent law cannot override basic human rights and sovereign domestic adoption decrees, Miss Miller,” Sterling said firmly.

“It can if corrupt foreign magistrates are bribed to issue transnational custody warrants that bypass domestic protections while our State Department is caught sleeping in diplomatic red tape,” I countered, my voice sharp and unyielding.

Sterling stared at the thumb drive for a long, calculating moment before plugging it into his secure desktop terminal.

He tapped his keyboard, pulling up the encrypted video of Dr. Evelyn Vance and the accompanying Swiss server logs.

As the video played across his screen, Sterling’s jaw tightened visibly.

“Dr. Vance... the federal government has had an active international warrant out for her arrest for twenty-five years for her role in the clinic raid,” Sterling murmured. “If she’s cooperating with us from Zurich, and we can verify these Swiss bank routing numbers... we can bypass the slow diplomatic channels entirely.”

“How?” I asked.

“By issuing an emergency red notice through Interpol under international trafficking and biological exploitation statutes,” Sterling said, his eyes locking onto mine with sudden, decisive energy. “If Marcus Vance or any other operative associated with Veritas tries to file a transnational writ against your family across any European or American border, they won't be serving legal papers—they’ll be walking straight into an international arrest trap.”

“Do it,” I said without hesitation. “Issue the red notices. Let them come.”

Attorney Sterling smiled grimly, reaching for his office phone.

“Consider it done, Mrs. Miller. Let’s see how comfortable their Swiss fiduciary lawyers feel when Interpol starts freezing their personal bank accounts.”

As Chloe and I walked out of the federal building an hour later, the sun was beginning to dip below the city skyline, casting long, dramatic shadows across the pavement.

We had drawn our battle lines.
