Chapter 8 - The St. Joseph’s NICU Siege and the Corporate Legal Wolves

The tires of our sedan screeched as Michael whipped the car into the emergency ambulance bay of St. Joseph’s Hospital, cutting off a delivery van and throwing us forward against our seatbelts.
We didn't wait to park properly; we burst out of the doors and sprinted through the automatic entrance sliding glass, ignoring the startled security guards at the front desk.
“Fourth floor! Neonatal ICU!” I yelled over my shoulder as Chloe, Michael, and I charged toward the elevator bank.
We didn't wait for the elevator; we threw open the heavy steel door of the stairwell and ran up four flights of concrete stairs, our lungs burning, our adrenaline surging at maximum capacity.
When we finally burst through the fourth-floor stairwell door, the scene waiting for us in the hallway looked like a corporate war zone.
Standing directly outside the secure glass doors of the Neonatal ICU were three men in expensive charcoal suits holding heavy leather briefcases, flanked by two armed, private security contractors wearing tactical vests marked with the bold corporate logo: VERITAS MEDICAL HOLDINGS.
At the center of the confrontation was Dr. Aris Thorne, standing with his arms crossed defensively in front of the sliding glass entrance, blocking their path.
“I am telling you for the last time, you cannot enter this ward!” Dr. Thorne shouted at the lead attorney, who held a stamped federal document aloft. “That infant is a human patient under my direct medical care! You have no legal right to seize a newborn baby from a hospital nursery!”
“Dr. Thorne, you are obstructing the execution of a federal writ of replevin issued by Magistrate Judge Henderson,” the lead attorney replied smoothly, his voice dripping with condescending corporate arrogance. “Veritas Medical Holdings holds the exclusive biological patent and guardianship assignment for subject infant Lucy under federal intellectual property asset code 88-B. Step aside immediately, or we will have our security detail charge you with obstruction of justice.”
“Step away from the door!” I screamed, my voice cutting through the corridor like a siren as Michael, Chloe, and I barreled down the hallway.
The three corporate attorneys and the two tactical security guards spun around in unison.
The lead attorney frowned, looking down at his clipboard.
“Ah, Mrs. Miller, Mr. Miller. We were hoping you’d arrive before we had to initiate standard extraction protocols,” the attorney said with a sickeningly polite smile. “As you can see, our legal paperwork is entirely in order. Hand over the secure access codes to the neonatal ward, and we can make this administrative transition entirely peaceful.”
I marched right up until I was standing inches away from the lead attorney’s expensive silk tie, my eyes locked onto his with pure, unadulterated venom.
“Listen to me very carefully, you corporate scumbag,” I hissed, my voice shaking with rage. “That baby is not an asset. She is not intellectual property. She is my flesh and blood, born of my body, and if you or your little rent-a-cop thugs take one step through those glass doors, I will personally ensure you spend the rest of your natural lives in a federal penitentiary.”
The attorney chuckled condescendingly, adjusting his gold-rimmed glasses.
“Mrs. Miller, emotion has no standing in federal patent law. Dr. Petrov’s legal framework was airtight. That child’s DNA sequence is legally owned by Veritas—”
Before he could finish his sentence, I reached into my coat pocket, pulled out the encrypted flash drive Agent Vance had given me, and slammed it down hard onto the metal top of his briefcase.
“Check your files again, counselor,” I interrupted, my voice ringing out across the entire hallway. “Dr. Petrov’s entire corporate framework was built on fraudulent shell entities, tax evasion, and illegal biological trafficking. Every single patent filing associated with Vault A and Vault B was voided by federal asset forfeiture orders issued three hours ago by the HHS Office of Inspector General.”
The attorney’s condescending smile instantly vanished.
He snatched the flash drive off his briefcase, his eyes darting frantically toward the lead tactical guard.
“Mr. Davis... check the secure portal terminal right now. Verify those asset forfeiture flags,” the attorney snapped, his voice losing its polished composure.
The tactical guard pulled a secure ruggedized laptop out of his tactical pouch, flipped it open, and began frantically typing encryption keys.
For thirty agonizing seconds, the hallway was dead silent.
Then the guard’s face turned completely pale, and he looked up at the attorney with wide, panicked eyes.
“Sir... he’s right. The federal asset forfeiture server just pushed a global revocation code across all Veritas bio-patents. Our legal standing... it’s completely gone.”
A triumphant gasp escaped Chloe’s lips, and Michael pulled me into a tight, desperate embrace.

But before the corporate attorneys could retreat, the elevator doors at the end of the hall chimed loudly.
And out stepped three federal marshals accompanied by Judge Henderson himself, holding an emergency injunction that was about to permanently shatter Veritas Medical Holdings once and for all.
