Chapter 11 - Smoke on the Interstate and the Ambush at the Annex

The heavy Maybach surged forward with a deafening roar as the twin-turbo supercharger engaged, slamming us back against our leather seats while a dense cloud of thick grey smoke billowed from the rear exhaust pipes to blind the pursuing trucks.
Mason worked the console controls with lightning speed, shifting manual gears as the armored vehicle drifted across two lanes of wet asphalt to dodge a barrage of armor-piercing rounds.
“They’ve got us flanked on the exit ramp, Boss!” Mason shouted over the screaming metal and shattered glass. “Two more vehicles just blocked the overpass ahead!”
Gabriel didn’t flinch. He racked the slide of his Sig Sauer, his dark eyes narrowing as he calculated the angles of impact.
“They want a war on state property? We’ll give them a massacre,” Gabriel said coldly, pressing the intercom button linked to the secondary escort vehicles trailing two hundred yards behind us. “All units, pit maneuver the lead truck. Take out their tires and leave no survivors.”
Before the words had even finished echoing in the cabin, the two following black SUVs broke through our smoke screen like charging rhinos, slamming violently into the flanks of our ambushers and sending them spinning off the wet concrete into a shallow ditch filled with dry corn stalks.
Our Maybach powered straight through the debris, its reinforced steel bumper crushing a wooden gate as we hurtled onto the abandoned access road leading directly to the Marion Federal Penitentiary annex.
I gripped the edge of the leather seat, my knuckles turning white, but my heart wasn't pounding with fear anymore—it was beating with a cold, focused fury.

“They didn't just want to stop our car,” I said, looking over at Gabriel as he calmly re-holstered his sidearm. “They wanted to prevent us from reaching Julian before he could sign the asset transfer papers.”
“Which means your stepbrother holds the final encryption key to whatever remains of Viktor Vance’s hidden accounts,” Gabriel replied, his gaze shifting to meet mine with an intense, quiet gravity. “And he’s about to find out what happens when you try to sell out the wrong people.”
