Chapter 13 - The Confession and the Crumbling Empire of Lies

Julian’s hands shook violently as he picked up the pen, the metal handcuffs clinking against the table like a death knell.
He knew there was no escape, no clever legal loophole, and no corporate sponsor coming to bail him out.
Viktor Vance was locked in a sub-level cell in Chicago, his paramilitary network was destroyed, and Gabriel Kane was standing inches away, waiting for a reason to erase him from the census.
Scratch. Scratch.
The pen moved rapidly across the paper as Julian signed his name to the full confession, legally clearing my name of the false embezzlement charges that had haunted me for four years and transferring the final administrative control codes of Vance’s shell corporations directly back into my ledger.
I picked up the signed document, checking every line with the meticulous precision of an expert auditor before sliding it neatly into my leather folder.
“It’s done,” I said softly, looking down at my stepbrother one last time without an ounce of pity or satisfaction. “Enjoy your stay, Julian.”
Gabriel didn't say another word to him. He simply placed a heavy hand on my lower back, guiding me out of the visitation booth and away from the cell block without looking back once.
As the heavy steel doors locked behind us, sealing Julian away in his permanent cage, the oppressive weight that had hung over my shoulders for four long years finally evaporated into nothingness.
We walked back out into the courtyard, where the sleet had turned into a steady, freezing drizzle.
“Clean slate,” Gabriel noted quietly as we climbed back into the armored Maybach. “Your criminal record is expunged at the federal level as of ten minutes ago. My legal team processed the paperwork while we were inside.”
I turned to look at him, stunned by the sheer scope of his influence and the quiet thoughtfulness behind his cold exterior.
“You had that prepared before we even walked through the prison doors?” I asked, my voice barely above a whisper.
Gabriel looked over at me, a rare, genuine softness touching the corners of his dark eyes.
“I make it a habit, Claire, of ensuring that anyone who belongs to my world is completely untouchable by anyone else,” Gabriel said smoothly.

He reached across the console, gently taking my hand in his large, warm palm.
“And as of today, you don't ever have to run from your past again.”
