Chapter 15 - The Heart of the Syndicate and the New Dawn

The morning sun broke over Lake Michigan with blinding clarity, washing away the remnants of the storm and painting the Chicago skyline in brilliant shades of gold and amber.
I stood by the floor-to-ceiling glass windows of the penthouse office, wearing a sharply tailored charcoal blazer over a silk blouse, my hair pulled back neatly, my sensible shoes replaced with polished leather heels that clicked with quiet confidence against the marble floor.
Behind me, the door to the private nursery clicked open, and I heard the soft, happy gurgle of baby Eli as one of the trusted nurses carried him into the main suite for his morning visit.
Without hesitation, I turned around, walked down the short corridor, and scooped the six-month-old baby into my arms, pressing him against my chest as he grabbed happily at my lapel button.
Gabriel stepped out of his study, pausing in the doorway as he watched us standing in the morning light.
The ruthless, feared king of the Chicago underworld looked at the woman who had walked into his life covered in blood and torn wool, and for the first time, a slow, undeniable warmth settled deep into his dark eyes.
“He’s getting heavy,” Gabriel observed quietly, walking over and resting a large, warm hand gently on Eli’s head.
“He’s growing,” I corrected with a soft smile, looking up into Gabriel’s face. “Which means he’s going to need a lot more financial oversight if he’s going to inherit this empire one day.”
Gabriel reached out, his fingers brushing against mine where they held the baby close, sending a warm, electric current straight through my veins that had nothing to do with business and everything to do with fate.
“The empire belongs to the family, Claire,” Gabriel murmured, his voice dropping into a low, hypnotic register that made the rest of the world fade away. “And the family... is finally complete.”
As the city buzzed with life far below our feet, I knew my days of hiding in the background as the quiet accountant in the cardigan were gone forever.

I hadn't just survived Gabriel Kane’s world.
I had rewritten its rules, balanced its books, and claimed the beating heart of Chicago's most dangerous man.
