Chapter 4 - The First Subpoena and the Collapse of the Socialite Shield

The music at the Coronado Bay Club had long since stopped, replaced by the heavy, rhythmic crashing of the Pacific waves against the seawall and the suffocating silence of a hundred high-ranking witnesses trapped in an unfolding scandal.
Admiral Vance stood beside me, his presence an immovable fortress that shielded me from the panicked whispers of the military brass.
My father, Captain Richard Sterling, was shaking so violently that he could no longer hold his glass of champagne; it slipped from his fingers, shattering into a thousand sparkling shards against the polished mahogany floor.
"Richard," Admiral Vance said, his voice dropping into a low, menacing register that commanded absolute attention.
"You have exactly ten minutes to clear your office at the command headquarters. Every digital file, physical ledger, and procurement record from your tenure is now federal property under the direct supervision of Commander Sterling."
"You can't do this without a tribunal!" Richard choked out, his voice cracking with desperation as he tried to claw back a shred of his vanished authority.
"I demand representation! I demand a hearing before the board!"
"You had your hearing five years ago when you abandoned an operative in a combat zone and signed off on her death certificate to protect your promotion metrics," I replied, stepping forward and sliding the first federal subpoena directly into the breast pocket of his pristine white uniform jacket.
"That was your hearing, Father. Now, it’s time for the verdict."
Chloe lunged forward like a feral animal, her manicured fingernails clawing toward my face in a blind rage to rip the papers from my hands.
"You bitch!" she screamed, abandoning all pretense of elite pedigree as her true, vicious nature spilled out for the entire officer corps to witness.
"You’re ruining everything! We made you! You were nothing without this family!"
Before her fingers could even graze my collarbone, my hand shot out with blinding speed, catching her wrist in mid-air and locking her in a tight, inescapable hold that instantly brought tears of agony to her eyes.
"The last person who tried to claw at me in the dark left a piece of their skin on my knife in Somalia," I whispered coldly into her ear, leaning in just enough so only she could hear the chilling reality of my past.
"Do not test my patience, little sister. You have no idea what I’ve survived."
With a sharp twist, I shoved her backward, sending her sprawling unceremoniously onto the expensive Persian rug spread across the outdoor terrace.
Several junior officers instinctively stepped forward to help her up, but a single, blistering glare from Admiral Vance froze them in their tracks.
"Touch her and you're reporting to my desk for insubordination," Vance warned quietly, ensuring that the Sterling family stood entirely isolated in their disgrace.
My mother, Elena Sterling, who had spent the entire evening hiding behind a pillar in total shock, finally rushed forward, sobbing hysterically as she dropped to her knees beside Chloe.
"Richard! Do something!" Elena wailed, looking up at her broken husband with accusatory horror.
"Tell them to stop this! Our reputation... our friends... everything we built is gone!"
"Your reputation was built on a foundation of lies and discarded human lives," I said, turning my back on them as I adjusted the collar of my torn shirt.
"And now, the tide is coming in."
Admiral Vance gestured toward the perimeter of the club, where two matte-black military police vehicles had just rolled silently across the sand, their headlights cutting harsh beams through the gathering dusk.

Four heavily armed shore patrol officers stepped out, marching with crisp, synchronized precision toward the terrace entrance.
The final illusion of the Sterling family's untouchable immunity was officially dead, replaced by the cold, unyielding machinery of military justice.
